Regarding the short rest, I should make it clear I don't think we 'should' have caught him. On the other hand, we rested because we'd just had the living snot beaten out of us, but to be fair, so had the priest. He was way into bloodied, and even though we rested, out ran a fleet-pursuiting predator druid, and all of us on horseback (he was on foot until he reached the cabin).
My point being that it wouldn't have been totally unlikely or incredible for us to catch up to him. No one would have gasped at the DM fudging the story to make up for our rest. It simply would have been more fun, rather than us floundering around without a clue.
What amazed me was that given that from the DM's perspective, we needed to catch him for the story to progress, that he didn't give us any more clues/bait as to what to do next, from my perspective, he could have easily remedied this.
