Things I LIKE about Mongoose

They make lots of books. Seriously, they do :D And I sure do want some...
Infernum looks interesting,
The Quintessential series has a few titles I want (Wizard seems good in particular),
The Book of the Planes,
Encyclopedia Arcana: Crossbreeding,

Encyclopedia Arcana: Necromancy is good. I can testify to that.

Now if I only had more money

Like I said, the occasional female nipples in the art is something I like about Mongoose product, especially where clearly appropriate (Conan). As I understand it, "community standards of decency" actually means "community standards in the most puritanical place in the USA" - and that's _very_ puritanical compared to UK standards or even Seattle standards. The d20 license specifically bans almost all cases of female nudity AIR, certainly any of the Conan illustrations.

Edit: ie, TSR's 1e Monster Manual and Legends & Lore would fall foul of this clause. The USA seems a hell of a lot more puritanical now than in 1977, whereas UK & most of the world hasn't changed so much either way.

Whatever other failings they may have (espically in the editorial department) Mongoose's customer service is top notch. They pay attention to their customers opinions, take them seriously, and respond with appropriate measures and grace. That alone nets them a gold star in my book.

Plus they are always reaching, always trying new things and not settling for the tried-and-true. Sometimes they fail (specatcularly) but at least they try.

Later.

This is why I like to actually answer questions, rather than let rumours gather :)
Unfortunately, this is a 'no win' situation in this particular point ;). Fortunately, it doesn't really matter :).

I never wanted to imply that that's your main reason for the use of OGL, anyway. It's just one reason to use the OGL label on books that could otherwise bear the d20 logo *shrug*.

I'm from Europe, and when I came here it was kind of a 'culture shock' in this regard. That's the point that makes the expression "community standards of decency" so frightening. Which standards? Of which community?

Which makes your use of D20 for Bab5 instead of OGL even more mystifying to me. That game would have kicked more tail then ten Jackie Chan films if you had went OGL with it and done your own thing from the start. I'm sorry, but I can't help but think that game would have been better for the OGl rather then the D20.

I think that the B5 game came out just before the Mongooses started doing so many OGL games. I think that Cybernet was what convinced them that they could go that direction, though Everquest was lready around from Sword & Sorcery.

And then came tha Valar Project...
