Thinking About OD&D

I have had good success with finding used copies at local used bookstores (at quite reasonable prices).

People constantly say this, but for the record, I have never, ever seen original D&D books at a used bookstore.

My gf is always keeping her eyes out for copies of the woodgrain box and ST1: Up the Garden Path at used bookstores, Oxfam shops and jumble sales, to bring home as a surprise for me. I keep telling her that it is a vain hope (especially where ST1 is concerned!) but she is my loving honey and who am I am to trample on her dreams?

I found mine at Half Price books in Seattle. I have also purchased tham at a used bookstore in London, Ontario, Canada. Montreal was less promising (at in terms of finding english language copies). :) So it might depend on your location how easy or hard it is. Not all used book stores handle RPGs but, when they do, a good selection isn't usually that hard to acquire.

There are also online dealers but they tend to be about 50% more expensive.

Don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I love your page and always read your new updates with great enjoyment :)

At our regular Tuesday night game last week, I brought along my OD&D white box plus the supplements, mainly because one player had expressed an interest in seeing what the original stuff looked like. The books created a quite a buzz and we ended up deciding to play some OD&D somewhere down the line :D. I'll certainly be using some of the ideas and musings that you've put on your site, so thanks in advance!

care must be taken there, mark. for surely you will lose your players to OD&D. :D

I've been thinking about OD&D for a while myself. Decided that I'm gonna referee a game for some friends in the beginning of April.

I got myself the pdf, just need to brush up on the rules.

Thank you; it's always nice to know that people are reading and enjoying the site. It's been quite a while since I've updated it (or my campaign log -- I'm way behind on that), but I've been feeling like working on it, again, lately.

Hey, that's great. I hope you have a blast with it. Be sure to check out Finarvyn's OD&D Discussion Boards; it's active with people running and playing OD&D, so it's a great resource for bouncing around ideas, asking questions, and getting feedback.

:D

A chance worth taking.

We vaguely talked about sampling a bunch of the early editions (OD&D, then some Moldvay/Cook, a bit of Mentzer, AD&D 1e and 2e and then... well, then just stopping, heh heh.) I even bought 5 sets of vintage dice, d20's numbered 0-9 and d4s so sharp you could put your eye on them. Yeah, I know, we should use chits, but I haven't been able to snag a set for a decent price off Ebay yet :(

That's a cool looking board - thanks for the link! Will have to check it out :)
