Thinking of getting a laptop/tablet/thingy. Suggestions?

I'm typing this on a Microsoft Surface tablet at a Best Buy. Really all I need a laptop for is to type using Office, to browse the internet, and to listen to music. This thing would be $450 with a keyboard (a 100 dollar keyboard), and I don't think I can install a music player.

I'd like to get something by tomorrow, so I'll be able to set it up before Gen Con. Any suggestions?

There probably are music players for Windows RT. Not sure if you can browse the Windows Store online but if you're still with the Surface see what shows up in the Store app. You can get Spotify, which may be able to play local music.

A Surface is, essentially, an iPad-like device which can run a full version of Office. If that covers what you need from a device, it's actually reasonably good at the current price.

Thanks for the insight. I think I agree. But I don't want to jump into something, since even $350 (plus, seriously, 100 bucks for a damned keyboard) is not cheap.

I'm posting this response on a Chromebook. In my experience, though, I'm not a huge fan of typing with Google Docs. Plus it'd mess up my workflow.

Oh, and Best Buy apparently has a 15 day return policy on tablets. Nice. I think I'll give the RT a try.

I thought about mentioning the Chromebook but I've not used Chrome OS, and I have a suspicion it is in some ways more limited (and more reliant on internet access) than RT.

I know people who love the Chromebook as a very portable additional device, though, so you may get other perspectives!

Been testing the Surface RT at work and kind of like it, not happy with the shape and feel but it grows on you, later get a dock for it. Some of the other 3rd party tablets have a better hardware configuration but so far have not needed them.
