This Bugs Me...

Always has. For reference, two seperate websites, neither of which has been updated for more than two years...

http://www.geocities.com/prkramer.geo/Deities.htm
http://members.tripod.com/Cavalier-Citadel/new_page_7.htm

In my cobweb ridden memory I faintly remember giving hesitant approval to do each of these pages as long as I was credited. Now, with Dusk going to print, I'm not so sure.

What's always bugged me about both these sites is that so much energy went into building a spin off project that could have been used to help build Dusk as a networld. Then again, it is perhaps for the best that this never happened since bringing a networld to print would make things tricky.

I wonder if I should get ahold of tripod and geocities and ask for these sites to be taken down? (as the original owners haven't checked them in some time I don't imagine too much trouble resulting).

I'd say that the existence of those sites would have had little effects on the sales of your product, as few people seem to know about them. Or rather, few knew about them until you posted this. If I were you I'd go back and edit your first post or ask a Moderator to delete this thread altogether.

I think it's more a matter that there are copyright issues involved, now that the setting is going to print.

It is more copyright related than anything else - more is at state now that it will be printed. I'm not too worried about the sites getting any traffic - like I said they've been abandoned for some time.

Also, Bagpuss, they were rather "liberal" with what permission I gave them. I told them they could use names and link back to relative materials, not transfer it to their own site. Because of this violation, any implicit contract I made has been violated.

MM,

By all means check with your regular attorney, but your copyright is not in jeopardy here in any way.

As for the sites - send the authors a friendly e-mail you would like them taken down as you are going to press and they seem to have abandoned them. Going farther than that is waste of your time and energy.

Good luck publishing! I have always admired Dusk.

I'm not saying what they did was right, but perhaps they decided to transfer the material to their site when yours moved? In any event, I agree with pogre, a friendly e-mail to them is more likely to get the results you're after.

Good luck, both with this and the print version of your setting.

The sites have been abandoned and the email's given aren't valid anymore.

Well, here's an interesting question for you. I just noticed someone who has nabbed a bunch of House Rules stuff and posted it on his (low volume) web site without asking the authors. Is this reprehensible, tacky, or reasonable?
