Those tricksy skills: Hide and Move Silently!

If they're not moving silently, but just walking, I generally consider the PCs to be taking 0 on their MS check- you might not hear a lightly-armored rogue padding down the hallway, even if he's not trying to be stealthy, but the fighter with the plate mail will clock in around -5 and be very easy to hear. Clank clank clank.

Hey, that is a really good idea... I'll have to use that.

I'd like to offer a slightly differing opinion from DanMcS on the subject of knowing where the sniper is shooting from. He said:

If the sniper makes his hide check at -20 versus your spot, you literally do not know what square he attacked from. You didn't see him. You were looking the wrong way when he shot or something.
While I certainly agree that you shouldn't be able to know which square he shot from, the character would at least know which direction it came from, and possibly the general distance as well (although more likely, that would have to be deduced by figuring out what he could be hiding behind and/or how far away he could be and still be able to shoot).

That sounds pretty reasonable to me as well. I will probably implement something along that line of thinking.
