Thoughts about the new Message Boards

Greetings:

First, I like the new boards. Second, do what you need to do Russ, I have no worries when it comes to this site -- I cannot believe you would ever let anything happen to it. Take care of yourself.

I do have some thoughts about the new boards, however. Specifically, for the Message Icons:

• General seems like an odd icon to have. General discussion should be the default, and the default should be "no icon" -- a massive sea of "Gen." icons just looks busy. BTW: I have selected NO ICON for this one, and get the Gen. icon anyway...
• How about some new icons as well? I was thinking that icons for the main publishers (WotC, S&SS, Green Ronin, etc -- primarily the ones that have a strong presence here) as well as one for each of the Hosted Sites.
• Can the AU one be made to look more rectangular like the others?

I agree, the icon setup certainly needs work. I'm certainly willing to listen to specific idon requests (although I'll have to ask other people to make 'em!) - so if anyone wants to come up with a good list, go for it!

Add a "tech" or "computer" icon and I'm happy.

Also, d20 modern, spycraft, mutants & masterminds should have icons too.

Why don't we just widen the column a bit and steal Nutkinlands? I'm also quite proficient in Photoshop--I wouldn't mind lending my hand at making ENWorld's icons.

NKL's icons aren't really suitable for here - what we need is a range of RPG related icons, while NKL has a range of general icons which covers everything.

Anyway, if anyone wants to make some more (or replace any of the current icons), they're more than welcome to do so!

I'm also going to have to start getting people to use the correct icons - if they can currently use the correct tags (which I know they can), they should be able to select the appropriate icons, too.

Suggestion: compress rather than expand.

The needed categories IMHO are:

- Paper (All Print Media)
- Announcement
- Meta
- Hive
- Setting-Specific
- OT
- Rules
- Pimp

Then, we need some to represent the old icons:

- Question/Request
- Silly Idea
- Yay!
- Boo!

Really, does GENCON need its own icon? Does it happen so often, and are people unable to find the threads normally? IMHO, it's better to categorize things like this by type -- some people will be extra-interested in Settings questions, and some will want to bypass OT discussion -- than to categorize them by subject.

Under what category would you put the thread, "How to port specific AU Feats to 3.5e?"

Too specific, but a very valiant attempt to make our lives better.

How about a humor/joke icon?

If there's going to be FR and DL icons there has to be a Greyhawk one as well. Though there are so many CS out there it may be better to have none.
