This is my proposal for the newest batch of icons - well, not all new, almost all the same. Five icons from the current set are removed and 24 new ones are being added. Here are the specifics.
DEPARTING ICONS
The discharged 4 are...
OFF TOPIC
Now that there is a dedicated off topic forum, this label has outlived it's purpose. Anything off topic should go immediately to off topic.
GENERIC
It's still there folks, it's the transparent icon
The space would be better used for an actual icon.
POLYHEDRON
Polyhedron is out of print IIRC, and it's been months since I last saw a poly thread. So I feel this should go the way of de dodo.
CONSOLE/PC GAMES
These two get merged into "Video Games" since I don't see a reason on this forum to distinguish the two.

First of a new family, the "mood" tags. Serious means, well, this is serious, like when you need to talk to a disruptive player and you're wanting advice.
CUTE
The first person who makes a Pikachu thread with this icon will be mobbed.
WOW!
Well, wow - what else.
WEIRD
Gamer dietary habits.
WHINE
When you want to complain about something (stay within CoC)
MISCHIEF
Up to something?
STUPID
For those threads describing the predictable result of the DM putting a 1st level party up against a great wyrm red dragon.
EVENT
For events in general
SCIENCE
This puppy (and the next one) will probably spend more time in The Hive than anywhere else. Science does go hand in hand with Sci-fi though.
SPORTS
Another primarily Off Topic item that is popular, there are enough threads in The Hive about sports to warrant this. I suppose you could use this tag to describe Fairs, Tournaments & Taverns in General discussion.
PHOTOS
Self explanatory.
MUSIC
Another that should be obvious.
POETRY
And yet another.
VIDEO GAMES
The successor to both console & pc games.
DRAGONLANCE
Folks have been asking.
CREATURE
It's da creature feature.
HOMEBREW
For all those custom things. I know this has a forum, but occasional house rules get posted elsewhere, particulary in the d20 OGL forums when dealing with d20 modern house rules.
PLOTS & PLACES
The former forum gets an icon so that it's devotees can have an easier time finding these threads in general.
PSIONICS
Love them or loathe them, they are a subject matter all their own in D&D.
CHARACTER
An icon for posting characters, be it PC or NPCs.
AD&D 1&2
This should be self explanatory as well.
The picture below shows how they should be arranged (ideally). Each row has thematically linked icons.
Row 1: General icons likely to be used in all forums
Row 2: The mood icons
Row 3: Sci Fi & Hive icons
Row 4: Sci Fi icons continued.
Row 5: Publisher related icons.
Row 6: Subject specific icons
Row 7: Settings and OGL games
Row 8&9: Rules topics.
Note that division isn't exact - it would be impossible to get an exact mix - but I did work for about 2 hours trying to get a layout that is logical and easy to follow.
