Threatening into Concealment

Do you threaten a creature in a square if the square it is standing in provides total concealment? In my game tonight a fighter was standing next to a hyena that was in the zone of a hunger of hadar and I was unsure if he threatened it while it was totally concealed, when it moved out of the square to stand next to him did it provoke an attack of opportunity? It was not marked and was not shifting.

I think that if you cannot see a creature, you cannot make an OA against him. That may be the case here.

It comes down to that. If you cannot see the creature, then you cannot OA. If you can see the creature, then you -can- OA.

I agree that you shouldn't threaten a target you can't see, does anyone know where it actually says that though?
