Three Cheers for Patrick Younts

Hey everyone,

I just want to give credit where due. My players have historically snubbed their noses at summon monster spells of all varieties, citing the long casting time and low cost/benefit ratio. I bought a copy of "A Menagerie of Summoner Options" by Patrick Younts (aka Arcane Rune Press) from RPGNow.com. I showed it to the groups wizard player and he really liked it. In the only combat encounter of our last session (new campaign) he used SM I & II to excellent effect, and he selected SF (Conjuration) and Augment Summoning as his feats. He has his feats planned out through level 9, and they're all from Mr. Younts's book. Best of all, when he left after the game, he said he was going to the store on his way home so he could by index cards on which to stat monsters he plans to summon regularly. The joyous notion of one of my players slaving over monster statblocks by itself is more than worth the cost of the pdf. I recommend it highly. So, thank you, Patrick Younts, for showing my players that Summon Monster can be really cool. :)

Indeed. Mr Younts does rock.

The man has released killer pumpkins into my game, and my players are still trying to recover from the experience :)

Ya, I've been enjoying a few of his books for years now. THe Pumkins books was good but I haven't seen the conjuror one yet. I just got Ancient Engines and look fiorward to reading that one.

Thanks, guys.

This thread came along just at the right time - it's like the stick that beats back my natural gloomy melancholy.

I'm glad to hear people are able to use some of my work in a way that makes things more fun for them, and for their players (and killer pumpkins keep heroes humble!). That's my whole goal in writing stuff.

"The Pumpkin Patch" is almost certainly going to be the product that brings me into the PDF fold, Patrick, once I figure out how to bind the print-out to stand up to wear and tear. Your PDFs seem to have more good ideas in them than some whole companies' lines manage.

I've found that just hole punching it placing them in a three ring binder works pretty good

Well, I've printed my freebie copies on heavy stock paper, and hole punched them into a three ring binder. That's worked out pretty well.

With other PDFs I've purchased, I've occassionally put a fold of clear tape on the edges of all the pages. Basically, I just put half the tape on one side, and then fold it over to the other - it keeps the page edges sturdy when I flip through them to reference.

I like page protectors myself, and a touch with a glue stick can keep the pages from falling out.

I have been having fun with the Pumpkin Patch, and have added Ancient Engines to my mental wish list. (I have found in the past that I am more likely to purchase from the list in my head than the one at RPGNow...)

The Auld Grump, Ross glue sticks at least.

Patrick has been doing some great work and I'm proud that he's working with Ronin Arts. And no matter what some reviewers say, I think he did a great job with Way of the Arcane Archer.
