Tiefling Character

Hi,

Im still confused with when a players creates a character using a non-standard race.
I understand that a player who plays a teifling has to get to 2000xp to go up to the next
level instead of the usual 1000xp. What im confused about is how many HD they start off
with, at the moment the player has 1 lvl of Rogue and has 1d6 (+con) Hitpoints, this doesnt
seem much especially if they have to survive for 2000xp worth of time.

Is this how it works?

TIA

Yes, that's how it works. The character is treated as a 2nd lvl character (1 class level + 1 level of LA) for purposes of XP and equipment. The idea is that the increased abilities of the non-standard race will keep him alive. That does not always work out in practice :)

Perhaps it would help if you think of it as a 2nd level character with one level in Tiefling and one in Rogue. The "Level" in Tiefling doesn't give Skills, feats, BAB, Saves etc etc., but it does use up the 1000 XP a normal character (a Human) would have invested in his first level of a character class.
