Tiefling subrace fluff

Tiefling subrace fluff

One thing I felt needed more exploration in MTOFs was Tiefling fluff, they have all these new subraces, but very littpe fluff to them, I mean what does it mean to be a Fiernan Tiefling compared to a Disian or Mammonian Tiefling. Do they look different, are they different in cultural out look, stereotypes about them, inclinations towards certain behaviors, are they more common in some places and settings then others (I assume each subrace of Tiefling is common on its repective layer).

So what kind of fluff shpuld we have had for Tiefling subraces?

Because compared to Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Gnome and even Gith subrace fluff Tiefling subrace fluff is lacking.

I accidently put this thread in the wrong subforum originally.

The layer that is mostly swamp, Tieflings do not resist Fire but can Swim.
Frozen layers, Tieflings swap Fire and Cold special rules.

Abyssal Tieflings have more variety. Did the Sword Coast Adventurers' Guide sidebar show up in Mordenkainen also?

No.

Fourth Edition had these:

- Broken Mirror tieflings trace their power to Levistus and have the power to bestow ill-fortune.
- Blightseer tieflings trace their power to Baalzebul and have the power to cause decay in whatever they chose to look at.

I think it depends on how many of these special tieflings there are. If there are very few, they probably look upon themselves as superior to their fellows (they are extra special). The 9 Hells would encourage that kind of social hierarchy. The dichotomy of "you are favored" vs. "you are still just a mortal" probably eats away at them.

You make some assumptions here that I wouldn't. For example, I'd call them "rare variants" rather than full subraces. Mountain dwarves and wood elves are subraces with large populations that breed true and established cultural traits for their people. Variant tieflings seem to be something that pops up on rare occasions out of the general tiefling population, which isn't large in the first place. At best you might get a single family line that breeds true. They're not large populations with any sort of established cultural outlook. I also wouldn't assume that they pop up on their respective layer of the Nine Hells. AFAIK tieflings are native to the Prime and don't appear with any frequency in the Nine Hells.
