You could pull a Forgotten Realms in the case of traversing the timestream. Faerûn is riddled with stationary portals. Ther are only a remote handful that are capable of delivering creatures that stride through them into the past. When this happens you arrive in a time/place keyed to the portal and are stripped of equipment and spells that do not exist in said timeframe. After a year in the past you appear in the future (present) one year after you left. Any gear you acquired in the past is stripped from the character and held in stasis for him/her until he/she goes back to the past again. Upon coming forward any gear you lost going back is restored to the character.
