Tiny Reach Weapons

the Jester

Legend
What reach does a Tiny creature, for example a fey, have if it is using a reach weapon?

Edit: 2x0 = 0.

Shouldn't it get something out of this? Am I missing a piece of rules somewhere?

A Pair of Completely Unofficial Rules

I was talking to Andy Collins, senior RPG designer at Wizards of the Coast, about threatened areas and attacks of opportunity not long ago, and the two of us cooked up two rules we're going to try out in our own games.

Tiny Creatures with Reach Weapons

As noted earlier, using a reach weapon doubles your natural reach. If your natural reach is 0, your reach is still 0 when you wield a reach weapon. As a variant, allow Tiny creatures a reach of 5 feet when they use reach weapons.

doesn't work for me...sorry

The officieal rule is 2X0 = 0.

The common sense rule should be used ... but you'll need to apply common sense on a case by case basis. A nearly 2' tall creature using a 4' long weapon should probably have a 5' reach. A 1' tall creature with a 2' long weapon should probably not.

Be careful about applying common sense. :)

I mean, do you think a 3ft-tall creature (halfling) without a weapon (0ft) would have any longer reach than a 1ft-tall creature with a 2ft-long weapon? That logic breaks down in the rules system, so I quite honestly don't think you should apply it that way. I think just houseruling that Tiny creatures with reach weapons gain reach 5ft is fine. The cases it occurs will be extremely seldom anyway.

The interesting case is when the tiny creatures power attacks with a finessed spiked chain, turning all the "to hit" bonuses to damage via 2x1.

Tiny gives +2 to hit (+4 damage), is there a tiny race granting high dex (like +6 or +8)? That's another 3-4 "to hit", or another 6-8 damage via power attack.

Pretty funny if you have a tiny fey fighter type with Dex=30 using power attack for big damage, while at the same time maintaining quite a good AC.

What does a tiny spiked chain do, base damage? 2d2?

i think power attack is BAB only. therefore you can't add "all" your to hit bonus. like size to it... only the BAB. and then only the part of the BAB you wish to use.

Yes, granted. So you have to be a tiny fighter-type with enough BAB to support 5-6 power attack, i.e. BAB=5, 6, 7 is OK.

You will still be hitting a lot due to size bonuses, high dex, etc. etc.
