To Australian ENworlders-Any tips?

Gold Roger

First Post
Hey there, I recently arrived in Australia intending to stay in the country for 9 months . Since I there are quite a few Australians on ENworld, I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to tap that resource ;)

So, if any of you have some tips for a foreigner looking to live, travel and work here, shot away.

Thankful for any advice,
GR

What sort of advice are you after? Places to see? Places to avoid?

I should be able to help but I'm not quite sure what sort of information you're after.

I'm not Australian but I've heard you should not leave children unattended with dingos and that playing footsie with platypuses isn't the smartest thing to do.

Places to see and places to avoid are certainly good things to hear about.

Another would be tips on finding short term work and accomodation, as that's what I'm currently trying to do, as I intend to stay in Sydney for 3 months first.

What sort of things are you interested in? Do you want to see the outback? Do you want to find a nice beach to just sun yourself? Do you want to get up close and personal with the wildlife? Are you interested in finding out more about Australian history? Do you just want to find a good Aussie pub to drink at?

You mention that you plan to stay in Sydney for a couple of months. Price-wise, Sydney is the most expensive place in Australia to live. There is backpacker accommodation but if that's not your thing don't expect to be able to find anything too cheap to stay in.

If you plan to work, make sure you have the correct visa. You don't want to get kicked out for working on a visa that didn't allow you to.

Anything really. Whatever your favorite national park, pub or beach might be, it would be great just to get some inside knowledge.

Yeah I already noticed that the living costs here are quite steep. I'm currently staying at a decent hostel and might have finally found a accomodation for my three month stay, though it will take some time till I can move in there.

I"ve got the working holiday visa, so that won't be a problem.

I'm not Australian, but when I was in Sydney last year I discovered an amazing Thai restaurant: Chat Thai, on Campbell Street. Fantastic food, for very reasonable prices.
