Did anyone else sit in on the Oriental Adventures seminar at Gen Con a few years ago? It made me feel that James really knew how to bring religion of any sort into games without being preachy or sacreligious.
Which isn't too surprising. IIRC, he used to be a minister of some stripe (Episcopal?).

Never met any of the developers in person, but they all seem pretty nice. As someone else said, Monte seems to be better at mechanics and James seems to be better at story.

Or, it could just be that Monte was part of the 3E design team and, since I think 3E is very mechanically sound (not perfect, but quite nice), I associate him with mechanical expertise. Similarly, James' stories are more to my liking (Monte appears to like a bit too many weird magic things for my taste), so I associate storytelling with him.

Regardless, I don't see any reason to trash either of them. Both are among the more talented d20 game designers out there.

Monte Cook is the polar opposite of James Wyatt (and started working on D&D in 1994). While an incredibly good game mechanic (almost as good as I am, ;)), his storytelling skills are still developing as anyone can see from the Diamond Throne stuff. He took basically a mechanics viewpoint of what he could do to make a variant d20 Fantasy game and then wrote the storyline in.
B.S. Have you ever read his fiction, for instance? His Dark*Matter novel?
