TOCC, a new free D&D alternative

Certification has to be validated by clicking on the box. It was a mistake for me to have it visible I admit, and I will be fixing that mistake in the next patch (a fairly minor patch in a month or two). As for the layout I'm not going to argue with you about it being ugly, but I've never liked the two column format for PDFs personally.

As for why the file is corrupt for you teichman that's just plain weird because I've confirmed it working on both Macs and PCs using three different PDF viewers.

It looks like I missed a few points earlier. TOCC originally stood for The Overly Complex Chimera as it was a combined the elements of several other systems into a single unit. I came up with the name during the design process before it was streamlined to be less complex and I've grown rather attached to it so I don't feel like changing it. However, since the name is a turn off to new players I decided to stick to the abbreviation rather than writing out the game's full name.

Also, does anyone have any advice about how to make the PDF less ugly. Given all of the feedback I've been receiving related to this I hope to make it more attractive in the next patch, but I want to know how.

Well, let’s start with the two-column issue. There’s a reason for it. Research has shown that the optimal line length for ease of reading is about ten to twelve words per line. You’re close to double that.

Now, two-columns isn’t the only way to address that, but it is a common one.

OK, that may not be so much about “less ugly”. <shrug>

Generally, I find it looks better to choose either indented or block style. Using both at once is overkill. Also, if you do indent the first line of each paragraph, 1 to 3 ems or so is sufficient.

The colors in the language table make it harder to read than it needs to be. With quick scan of the text, I didn’t see a reason for the colors. In any case, information should never be communicated by color alone. Not only because of color-blind readers, but also because the colors may be lost when printed. Or they just might not come out distinct enough on a particular printer.

Those are a few initial thoughts. Overall, though, I like a clean style like what you’ve got. Also, I generally advise people to not even start thinking about format/layout until they’re happy with the content, but it seems like you are happy with the content now.

Finally, have you asked yourself, “Why PDF?” PDF is a fine format, but you should make sure that you know why you choose it over other formats.

I'm a bit surprised that the colors are a problem, but they are just there to make it easier to see which languages use the same alphabets. The alphabets each of the languages uses is also listed, but I will try to pick better colors for this. Right now I'm in the process of turning the rules into a two column document, but this will take some time as I have to fight to make the tables work. On the plus side this means I get to remove the indenting as well.

As for why I picked a PDF for the rules, that's easy. PDFs are a single self contained document that can be moved between computers easily. PDFs can have a bookmark section added which makes finding what you're looking for easy. PDFs can't be edited easily so you know that your friend's copy of TOCC and yours are the same, this discourages cheating. The digital signature is included as an additional safeguard against this sort of editing. PDFs can also be downloaded quickly and easily by anyone who is interested in TOCC, and finally PDFs are free.

Seriously? How many people actually cheat at RPGs?† How many people never house-rule?

†And do you really think someone trying to cheat this way wouldn’t get caught? “...um...three of our books agree, yet yours has different wording that favors your PC...interesting...”

This might just be a result of my programming background, but I believe it's better to be safe than sorry. This also prevents players from accidentally editing the rules.
