Today is my last day!

I've been really quiet around here the last year or so with RL getting in the way of my favorite hobby but today ends an era of my life. It is my last day at Barnes & Noble. After starting my 8th year there (July 9,1999 was my first day and also my mom's b-day) and in my 11th year of book retail (November 14, 1995 I started a part-time job at Waldenbooks) it all comes to an end today. The hardest thing about leaving book retail (besides the friends that I've made) is that after all these years I'm going to have to pay regular retail price for books!

I do owe a lot to my experience in book retail. I've met all sorts of people including the love of my life (we met in the Star Wars section in Waldenbooks in 1996) and many friends that mean a lot to me and have made be a better person.

But tomorrow I start a new chapter in my life with a new job and a carreer change ( and more money!). I had my high school reunion (20th for those who are interested) this past summer and my best friend from Jr High and Highschool has to expand his company to Louisiana and needed someone he can trust to oversee the work projects and run the offices and asked me to do so. Furthermore he offered me what is basically a 30% increase in pay from my present position at Barnes & Noble (I'm or was the Music Manager). It was an offer that I could not pass up. My friend's company is Onsite Marine and builds barges, boats, and yacht support vessels. He also needs me to go to other job sites around the country including North Carolina, Missouri, and California and deal with clients and to go to places he doesn't have the time to go to which would allow the company to expand. I'm looking forward to these new experiences and adventures.

I have to admit that I have been spoiled in my life. Now I'll have a job that will actually pay me more then my 'inheritance' (my stock dividends) so that I can get a family and house of my own.

I'll now have a more regular schedule and actually be able to plan to play D&D again! It's been soooo lonnggg. Well, actually I've already had two sessions (character creation and 1 role playing) recently with a new party but at least I'll have weekends off (unless were nearing a deadline and we're behind schedule) so I can plan things out for the future.

Well, I just thought I share that with you'll since I've always considered this my online family.

I definitely know what you mean about work getting in the way of hobbies. I worked at a hospital for two year as a lab tech, evenings, and I had almost no life at all. It's VERY nice to be able to actually make plans again.

Good luck on your new job! Congrats!

grats!

I have always Loved books and being around them, but that's quite a raise..and of course paid traveling is great. Grats! and enjoy the new stuff!

I worked 5 christmas' in bookstores and there are a couple of things I have noticed since I left it 7 years ago.

1. The only part of the job I really miss is recomending books to people.
2. I still straiten shelves whenever I go into a bookstore.
