Tome of Horrors 3.5e, not bad

IIRC when Scott, Erica, Boz, et al started working on this ... that was the understanding. I still prefer the ToH version of many critters rather than WotC. Orogs, Ogrillan, and Half-ogres are very well done. The Dragonnel is perfect, and 1000% (one thousand!) better than the drivel that was in the Draconomicon.

bah! I'm just a ToH fanboy (and happened to be online when they were putting it together)

it's a nice conversion book, well recommended.

ps. most of it is online too!

QFT. I have the 3.0 version and saw no need to update to 3.5, since I can make any of the major changes (like the way DR works) in my head. The Wizards conversion of things like the Carytid Column were not as good as the TOH IMO, and also, having this is like having a REAL fiend folio and MM2 as opposed to the garbage that WOTC used those titles for.

Here's the thread from 2003 talking about just this issue. Basically, it turned out that one hand of WotC had no idea what the other hand was doing; one group said "go ahead, we're not going to convert those old monsters," while another group was planning to do just that...

At least, that's what I took from the whole scrum.

One thing I have to point out that's got me chuckling badly. The fact that quite a number of these creatures are already converted by WotC. What makes it funny is this quote in the book:

You won’t find any of the monsters in Tome of Horrors in any other official Wizards of the Coast product!

We worked directly with Wizards of the Coast to make sure that no monster in this book (well, only a handful) would be included in a later Wizards of the Coast product. So, you can
rest assured that the contents of this book will not be superceded by any later “offi cial” book.

When we first started work on Tome 1 (3.0), WoTC hadnt done any of the stuff that appears in Tome 1. We actually knew ahead of time what they planned (monster-wise) in their books and avoided duplicating the monsters. Only later did they release books that included stuff we'd already done.

It's their monsters, they can do whatever they want and whenever.

True- their monsters. Actually- wait. Since we made Tome 1 (3e and 3.5e) completely 100% open, including all text, monster names, etc...that means the monsters belong to the open source peeps as well. So ANYONE can do whatever/whenever with the converted monsters/new monsters so long as they follow the license stuff :)

The ToH 3.5 is the second best deal in 3.5 D&D, a pdf of I believe over 400 pages of 3.5 monsters for $10, beat only by the free srd IMO.

Particularly good if you want to convert over old modules with lots of wierd critters not in the 3.5 MM.

yep - and now that a few dozen ToH critters wound up being converted in WotC books after all, no one really takes that deal seriously at all anymore. ;)

including, say, paizo in their pathfinder series. :)

Skimming through this, I noticed that, too. I got it mainly for the conversions of some creatures I'd like to use, like kilmoullis, leprachauns, quicklings, Slaad Lords...

Slaad Lords? Did someone say Slaad Lords? :D

(Now that my life is slowing down I need to get back to that project.)
