Tome of Horrors and Repeat Monsters

the Jester

Legend
I know that SSS/NG has no control over the folks at WotC, but one of the biggest attractions of ToH was the claim that it wouldn't have duplicate monsters from other 3e official products, and it had a few (yeti, some BoVD stuff like Juiblex and Orcus, etc.) I was under the impression that WotC had made a gentleman's agreement with them not to duplicate their work...

On the front page of the site this morning, there's all this stuff about the Unapproachable East, and it looks like there's some more duplication coming our way. On top of that, it seems that the Fiend Folio 3e will have a few dupes as well.

Does anyone else find this irksome, or am I just testy today??

It's just you :p

In an open system, how can you expect there to be one and only one source for everything? There's bound to be overlap. Look at how many different sources some feats appear in. I don't hear anyone complaining ...

Sure, ToH was advertised has having completely "unique" stuff, but who believes advertising?

Well, it's just that I was under the impression that WotC had told them that they'd try to avoid duplication... it will make me feel ripped off if I have everything in the ToH in a year in other products....

I think it was more then just advertising. This wasa big selling point and if it proves to be totally false it could leave many fans irked.

Uh, and how does any of this reflect on Wotc. From what I have gathered, only the SSS crew made any claim to that effect and most of the wording amounted to, "we are working hard to try and prevent overlap..." And even that was only in regards to MMII, not all future products.

Please explain to me why Wotc should concede absolute ground in converting material that arose out of the DND liscence that they themselves control to what will all but surely be a rather be in the long haul a rather minor product from a third party which relativly few people will either purchase or even have access to. Again, why should Wotc give third party's any slack? Are you afraid that will in fact beat them at your own game?

Or is this rather the griping of a small number of people who purchased Tomb of Horrors and are so anal about the material in their books being 'official' that they would seek to deny those who would see great worth in a Wotc alternative any chance of that. Could you simply be content with having conversions from any source?

First, slow down way too many assumptions here. How does this reflect on Wizards? WEll, if they made they agreement and then went back on their word it refelcts poorly. And it was in regard to Fiend Folio and other products.

I can't say what Wizards should or should not do, all I care about is the claim of what they did.

What griping and who's anal? Who care's about what's official and what isn't? Officialy means nothing to me. All this is about is the claim that there would be little to no overlap. I really think you may be looking for a fight were there is none.

Well I'm quite content having the conversions that I already have. Official means nothing to me, really, it's my game, I'm the one who determines "Official" once you set foot inside my world.

For what it's worth, Necromancer had two caveats in their claims.

First off, they said from the beginning that there would be a few overlapping critters. They knew from the get-go that there would be some (i.e. Orcus).

Second, they said it wouldn't have much overlap with existing WotC products. Nobody can guarantee future stuff, neither SSS nor WotC. Wizards can only say "We don't have these critters now, and don't have any immediate plans." There's no way they could justify locking themselves into an iron-clad agreement regarding future works; just not smart business.

I agree that I'd rather not see too much in the way of repitition, but I seriously doubt we're going to see more than a small fraction of it. Look how many creatures are in the ToH, after all.
