Tome of Horrors - The Art (oh the horrors!)

In my campaign, we assume that the devils and demons describe themselves as baatezu and tanar'ri.

Baatezu and tanar'ri sound scary and horrific. Yugoloth sounds like you're puking. I changed "yugoloth" for "yagloth" (pronounced as "YAGH-lot"), which is, IMHO, scarier.

I have the book and enjoyed very much leafing through it. There are more monsters in there than I am likely ever to use... While I wouldn't say the art was horrible, a bunch of them didn't inspire me much. Perhaps I have low expectations... or bad taste. However, what I do find fascinating is how people can say that the work sucked or was horrible so easily. I am sure at least some of the authors and production people (I suspect all) but some pride in the book.

Oh well. I give the book my thumbs up. Definitely a good money to content ratio to me.

Edit: nutkinland is a better place for this sort of argument than here. :)
Nutkinland? Now there's a cesspool to avoid. It was an intesting fringe group at one time, but the board has been taken over by walking egos chestbeating and grandstanding.

Isn't that right, Psion? ;)

I, jumping in with my opinion, prefer yugoloth to daemon. That might be just because I grew up with yugoloths, but it just sounds creepier and more distinct than daemon. Also (on the initial topic, what a surprise:) ) I kind of ignore the art when reading Sword and Sorcery monster books. I just absorb all of the text description and tweak it.

PS: Weren't there a modified bunch of demodands in second edition? I remember hearing something about gelereth, or something like that.

Sounds good to me. So does Yuggoth.

They are all "demons" as far most PC's would be concerned anyway, right? Even the ( For demiurge1138 ) Demodand/Gereleths and their little triangle pendants...

As there are two of us here in Ballarat who buy NG products regularly (at least as far as I know ;)), and our local gamestore owner generally only manages to get in one of any offering, it's a toss-up who gets the latest release. I was the first to pick up Necropolis, but Tome of Horrors I was not lucky enough with.

Will it take me 6+ months to eventually find? Possibly (that was the wait on BoEM2). Arrrggghhh!!!

So I will pass on the artwork question for now.

And just so this post isn't a complete waste of time:

I much prefer yugoloth to daemon (simply because of the pronunciation of daemon), but i'd prefer almost anything to yugoloth...

Cheers!

I still can't help but laugh when I read about the '15 ft tall black salad' though :D

I can empathize with them over that. When putting together Beyond Monks I was always worried that I would accidently type "marital arts" somewhere instead of martial arts. And maybe I did. Spellcheckers are evil.

Of course a book on marital arts, that might sell...

They were called Gereleths... although I'm not sure if the spelling's right.

Never cared for these beings, no matter what they're called. I think just having the three fiendish races, and then maybe Hordlings (who should be Demons) and Larvae (which are just undifferentiated Fiends) is enough.

SS books vs the Creature books
Perhaps I was hasty to word it that way. The newer stuff does look better but the majority of creature pictures in Swords & Sorcery look the same- dark and blotchy

As for book content-
I look forward to Vol #2. 'nuff said?
