Toning down wizards

There's simpler, and more reasonable ways to do that.

"Ok, as your first level characters are walking through down, they get smashed by a fire giant. Roll new characters."

Its torture, you must do it slowly and evilly. Like for instance:

DM:You enter a long hallway with a door at the end.
PC: We open the door.
DM:What hand do you use?
PC: Ummm... We leave the door.
DM: (untrapped door) Okay. You go down another hallway, but this one has a blue door.;)

Hahaha! I just started DMing and I do this sort of thing all the time.

I must say Domino, I'm dissapointed in you. That's an unimaginative and trite way to enforce the proposed 'wizards must carry only daggers' rule.

A much better way would be:
"OK, as your first level characters are walking through town, the God of Wizardry (or related god) appears, admonishing the wizard for carrying a staff, and summons an army of fire giants who smash the wizard "for touching an unclean weapon" and the party "for associating with an unclean wizard"... and then admonishes the town to never allow a wizard to touch any weapon other than a dagger, or next time the fire giants will smash them too.

OK, now roll new characters.

Side note: This also has the nice effect of making towsnpeople afraid to attack wizards with anything but daggers. Misinformation is awesome. Mages have been known to encourage this particular myth.

Edit1: (Oh, wait, you were talking about how to torture PC's. Yea, you have to do THAT more slowly, like kanithardm suggests...)

Edit2: If a GM ever does decide to have a 'daggers only' rule, I strongly suggest that they use the above scenario the first time a wizard attempts to carry an alternate weapon. Just carry, not use. Or maybe just picks one up. Note: When casting identify, wizards DO NOT TOUCH non-dagger weapons).

That wasn't about enforcing the dagger rule. It was about torturing the players.

Yea, I saw that afterwards. Post is edited to reflect that, but relatively left alone, 'cause I thought it was amuzing.

(I did think it was a little odd and out of context when I took it out of context like that. Odd?)

No offense, but it really doesn't matter whether or not a wizard can carry a two handed great mercurial sword or a dagger...with their base attack bonus, they won't be able to hit jack with it most of the time.

Every Bbeg in my game is named Kanithar. Whether its a girl or a minotaur or an elf, etc. So I love naming random innocent things Kanithar so my players get scared.

DM: You see a little girl, about 3.
PC: What is her name?
DM: Kanithar. (hehe)
PC: Aaaargh... Attack!! Kill!! Slaughter!!!;)

Heheh. When I play in your game I'm SO naming my PC Kanithar. I'm going to ask for the special ability to make people roll will saves by staring at them. No effect pass or fail the save, the PC just makes it, tells the GM the result, and the GM makes a little note, possibly chuckling for a particularly low roll.

(Dayum, I'm gonna have to ask for that on my next PC anyway!)
