Too Many Open Files error??

Michael Morris

First Post
I've seen this now 4 times, three here and once in the news forum. I just got up this morning so it isn't me but I'm curious as to the cause...

I'm getting those errors too. Also, I've been trying for 10 minutes to get a cursor in the posting window so I could add this post. I've emailed P-Kitty.

I'm also occaisonally getting "Forbidden You do not have access to this forum" messages when I try to read a thread...in General!

Something is very wrong.

Yeah, I'm getting lots of various errors as well... forbidden to post, too many open files, etc. Weird- perseverence seems to pay off eventually.

Now, now, we haven't even gotten around to accusing you of anything yet.

It's been going on all morning. It can be hellish trying to post something. Just for browsing it's not that bad since you can just hit F5 'till it shows up.

I seem to vaguely remember something like this happening before... Don't remember what was causing it. It kinda looks like we're having excessive traffic, but I can't see why. PC didn't update his story hour or anything.

These are server-side problems, apparently, maybe not specific to the forum phps. Too many files open- are there intermediate files used in making a page before it's sent in response to a GET request? A couple js files or something.

This could also be a load thing, especially since there are apparently problems with images and avatars. Could it be the newish topic tags? For instance, I'm looking at the meta forum page right now, and there are 110+ images on that page (25 threads listed, each has 3 images, one of which is the logo; sundry other images). That's 110 GET requests for those, plus any hidden files that aren't immediately obvious. Without the logos, its about 85, so the logos are adding 1/3 again as many requests for images. Could that be a problem?

Hmm I wonder if it's too many people trying to read the forums... since we have a link to various EN World forums in the news today. *shrug*
