Too much, too little

When a company regularly puts out new books on the game, it gets called "bloating the game". And people deride the company for it. People complain that they can't "keep up" with buying the books.

When a company does not regularly put out new books on the game, it gets called "killing the game". And people deride the company for it. People complain that there are no more books to buy.

What the hell is wrong with this customer base?

There are just different kinds of customers.

Of course, there are also some customers that just have to complain whatever :p

Well, you forgot some other bits....

"I'm tired of the standard European style d20 games. I want something exotic, like Africa!" Yet Nyambe isn't being heavily supported because the numbers weren't there.

"If stuff were free on the net, I'd be more prone to supporting the company." Yet companies that have done this, haven't exactly shown those results.

The consumer base is a wild rabid animal that must be put down for it's own good and properly trained. Yeah, that's the ticket...

I'm with you. I'm sick of seeing posters on this board whine about "bloat". Companies are here to make money. To make money, they support their products by releasing suppliments. Here's the money shot:

You don't have to use suppliments, folks.

If you did have to use all suppliments to continue playing, then "bloat" would be a valid complaint. As is, however, it is a baseless whine. You only need the core 3 books to play; everything else is gravy. Use what you like, ignore the rest, and carry on. Stop trying to validate your decision to switch to another game system by bashing 3E.

Who said anything about 3e? I thought Quasqueton was talking game companies in general. Otherwise, this thread would be an open invitation to start an edition war

Only to approximately the same extent as "Good day, how do you do?" might be. ;) :p

Because no matter what you do, people will bitch and whine.
But no, seriously, this is the heart of the matter.

And the settings are not detailed enough...or dictate the story too much.

And there is too much fluff...or crunch.

And WotC dominates the market...or there are too many publsihers.

The idea isn't to please everyone.

The idea is to please as many people as possible while keeping yourself as fat and happy as you can get.

Don't release as much as you can write. But release stuff to let people know you're still alive.

It's made up of customers? :)

"People" is too broad a term. The old axiom, "can't please all the people, all the time" holds fast here. You've got millions of gamers, all wanting their "ideal" of the same thing, so you have thousands of different visions of "the ideal."

Not so hard to grasp, to me. You'll never win 'em all. I really feel for the designers, I really do, when occasionally one cracks and says the same thing as you just did. Skip Williams expressed similar frustration on these forums back in 2000 when the MM was first released, and people complained about the layout. I couldn't help both laughing and feeling sypathetic at the same time. :o
