the best use of a tower shield I've found is with my summoner cleric... most of our combats end up in places with handy little corners... I tend to back myself into the corner, position the tower shield to form the third side of the triangle, and then let my summoned creatures deal out the damage... mmmmm pseudonatural dire weasels... lots of fun

One more question that occurred to me:
Since a tower shield is, essentially, more of a portable wall than a tool for intelligently parrying attacks, does it actually require the Shield Proficiency feat to use a tower shield? I.e. could your average wizard carry one around (barring weight considerations)?

You still require a Shield Proficiency feat.
At least you can use one of the shields for the price of one feat, regardless of size (from buckler to tower shield).
