Town Fair: Great adventure setting, but what should be there?

Arravis

First Post
I'll soon be running a game that takes place at a town fair (the town of Elventree in Forgotten Realms, to be exact :)), and I'm trying to put together a write up for the fair. I'm not sure what would be there though... I have Tournaments, Taverns and Fairs (a great book btw), but that mainly deals with games, and there's a lot more to a fair than that. So, any suggestions, ideas, etc? Seems like a great subject for the boards!

In the end, I'd love to have each booth and even written up for it, and I'll post it as a pdf :). Anyway, here's what I have so far:

**updated**

Auction area:
Still working on this one...

Central Stage: This large wooden platform would be the center of a lot of activity. Plays, musicians, jugglers, jesters, or just the mayor giving a speech. For the times that it's not being used, I could see a handler charging a silver for anyone that wishes to use it on the spot for a few minutes. Would be a good way for PC bards to find a quick audience.

Playmakers:

Lliira's Shadow: This group of playmakers have only recently made way to the Dales from the Heartlands. Elisa, a priestess of Lliira, leads this lighthearted group of actors. Their play range from serious epics of times long gone to loud comedies involving lots of physical humor.

Rulolo: Rulolo is a one man show whose dervish like movements have become well known. He plays every role... switching from character to character with minor illusions and a speed that’s stunning to watch. An hour-long play would take only 15 minutes in Rulolo's hands.

Musicians:

The Earthshakers: This group, originally from Rashamen, now travels throughout Cormyr, Sembia, and the Dalelands. All the musicians use drums, drums of all kinds, from hand drums to drums as large as a wagon. Once the Earthshakers get going, their music can be heard for miles and by those in the audience it's felt more then heard.

Local Musicians: There is a variety of local musicians, some play alone, some in small groups of three or four. Their skills vary greatly, but are still considered great entertainment, especially for the locals.

Entertainers:

Amuri: This beautiful half-elven juggler mixes mundane magic tricks in her act, turning out a unique experience. She's known to juggle anything... from chairs set on fire to double bladed swords.

Daughters of the Sands: This group of three musicians five dancers has made their way throughout Faerun from their home in Calimport. Their hypnotic skills tend to lull the crowd quite well as a few of their secretly planted pickpockets make their way through the audience. The grand finale of the Daughters of the Sands is when the Earthshakers join their musicians turning it to a massive spectacle of sight and sound. The Earthshakers aren't aware of the pick pocketing the Daughters of the Sands have arranged for.

Gaentro the Extraordinaire: This brightly dressed jester sports a massive wrinkled red hat, this is actually a puppet controlled by Gaentro. During his act, he uses a good deal of props such as large inflated leather balls, stiltwakers, giant paper-mache heads of famous personages, ladders, etc. During most of the routine, his red hat throws out insults and complaints to Gaentro, much to the amusement of the crowd. The show ends with a swordswallowing routine, wherein he does so with a total of 7 swords.

Food:

Alishto’s Amazing Awe-Inspiring Ale: Alishto is a Halfling brewer that’s rather fond of the fair circuit, using the sale of his ale as a excuse to tour the lands. Alishto’s ware is pulsch brown ale, a Halfling creation with a pleasant, nutty flavor (Fort save DC 11).

Grak's Haggis: Grak makes haggis... and insists that you eat some. If he's feeling generous, he'll only charge you 3 silver and let you leave with only a 5 lb bowl of the stuff. If he's not... he'll sit down next to you and insist you try all the different recipes he's been working on. Woe to ye.

Merchants:

Glittering History: Kelon Deris deals in ancient and rare coins, usually buying from small fairs then heading to the larger cities to sell his antiquities. Though there aren't many to purchase his historical coins at the fairs, he is more then glad to sell any he has on hand. Kelon only recently inherited this business from his father and is still learning the ropes. Though he knew much before his father's death, he has lost many of the contacts his father had and hopes to make new ones on his fair route.

Harmairma (Treasured Desires): This small jewelry booth is run by the half-elf Numion who specializes in old elven jewelry. He is eager to buy and repair such items and will always pay a fair price. Though he doesn’t have much in the way of inventory, his restoration work is flawless.
Bracelet: This elegant bracelet made of intertwining strands of silver meshed together, giving it surprising flexibility. (80 gp)
Comb: This exquisitely crafted silver comb has six ghostly moonstones inset along the handle (600 gp)
Giiraegisir (Brooches of Guardianship): These elaborate brooches belonged to the old noble houses of the Cormanthor and were often enchanted. (150 gp)
Glass Ball: This blue and white blown glass ball is made to look like clouds in the sky. (30 gp)
Leaf Pin: This small mithrall leaf pin has its edges and veins done in gold highlights. The “leaves” were originally scales from a suit of elven armor that had been partially destroyed. Numion placed the pins in the back and sells them individually. (5 gp)
Ring: This gold and silver ring has a beautiful fire opal glittering atop it. Etched on the inside is: “Cuamin linduva yassen megrille”, or “My bow shall sing with your sword”. (1,200 gp)
Sapphire Howl: This ring masterfully carved in the shape of a wolf’s head with jaws wide open. Amazingly, the entire ring is one made out of a single piece of sapphire. (4,800 gp)
Statuette: This delicately crafted ivory statuette is of a young elven boy with an engimatic smile. Unfortunately the statuette is cracked in half. (7 gp)
Vial Necklace: This gold rope necklace has a gold capped crystal vial at its end. (65 gp)

Jeleron the Scribe: Jeleron is an old scribe and letter writer for those that lack the skill or the simple elegance in penmanship. (no idea how much this will cost yet)

Nailas Wondrous Candles: Naila learned her craft from the well-known Master Herit Ruldegost of Athkatla, a renowned exotic candle maker. She knows the secret of making Fate Candles, charms well liked by many and used to bring luck. These candles unusual candles are made from either plain white wax or fabulously colored waxes and then carefully written on the outside. It is believed that when lit and the candle is expended that the requests written on it will come true. Usually it will be a pre-written prayer, wishes for luck or love or simply wealth. These candles though, are often custom made with specific desires written on them. Pre-made fate candle: 1 sp-5 sp; uniquely made candle 3 gp.

Stonefire: Meroth, a large human of half-orc lineage, travels the fair circuit whenever he is not working at his smithy near Daggerdale. He specializes in the softer metals, forged in the ancient methods. Each of his pieces is painstakingly made, for patience is the strongest of Meroth's traits. At his booth he has:
Brass Brazier: This masterwork brass brazier shines in splendor. Finely etched with tiny draconic runes that encircle the entire Brazier, forming a beautiful pattern. This brazier is an exact copy of an ancient one found in Tethyr, the runes are in prose and tell the tale of the first Shoon emperor. 125 gp, 2 lb.
Bronze Chest: This solid bronze chest is well made and seems nigh indestructible. 15 gp, 20 lbs.
Bronze Cups: These small bronze cups have become quite popular, each has a small but interesting bas-relief on its surface, usually some well-known personage or location. 2 gp each.
Copper Flask: This pocket flask is burnished to a bright high sheen. 1 gp.
Copper Pitcher: This pitcher is embossed with a woodland motif, with many small creatures hidden in the design. 8 gp, 1lb.
Copper Pot: This small copper pot is unusually thick, making it quite sturdy. It has a simple, but elegant, geometric pattern around the lip. 5 gp, 6 lb.

Thunder and Smoke: Samber Decirc is a young and large human that fairs from far Lantan and has travelled through Heartlands and the Dales promoting his family business, Smokepowder pistols. His booth has a long archery range and a wooden dummy target pitted and shattered with holes. His hope is that his tour of the realms will bring enough interest for his father’s business to move therein. Samber only has 8 pistols (DMG p145) left in stock, each selling for 250 gold pieces and comes in a velvet lined oak box. Additionally he has 1,200 bullets, sold in bag of 10 for 3 gold pieces and 11 small kegs of smokepowder, each also selling for 250 gp.

Walking Peddlers:
Cider
Healing powder (fake)
Firebreather promoting the shows on the stage
Muffins
Water

Crafts:

Art’s Haven: This large open booth is divided into three sections. The left section has Cygnus, who does quick portraits and drawings, ranging anywhere from 3 copper to 1 gold, depending on the complexity. The right section does brightly colored face and body painting, by the beautiful and talented Serepi, fondly called by all “Buttercup”. He prices range from 1 to 5 copper, though she often doesn’t charge children of obviously poorer families. The back section is covered in silks and leads to a small tattoo parlor run by master tattooist Diaglo of Thesk (unknown to all, Diaglo is also an informant for the Red Wizards).

Gregor’s Smithery: This hands-on smithery allows everyday people to take part in the process. For 3 silver a piece Gregor will walk a group of six through the process of making a simple iron item, be it a candlestick, a belt-hook, or something else.

Mistress Night, Seer of All: Mistress Night is a dramatic old woman who wears an onyx mask, which hides her face except for her piercing green eyes. Mistress Night claims to be a Rashameni witch, but is actually a failed wizard’s apprentice from Westgate.

P.S.: Yep, stole a few names as you can see, but I didn't think you guys would mind ;)

Don't forget the central funtion of a traditional fair...the auction, typically livestock, but other things are also auctioned...commodities and such. If they don't have traditional auctionables, how about things like grapes for making elven wine?

What most people think of as the fair, are the things that set up around the fair to make money off of and entertain the people who are not bidding at that moment. The entertainment took off and supplanted the auctions later. Now no one remembers the poor little auctions....*sniff*

Introducing: Zook Nook Boddynock Namfoodel III - Gnome Inventor and Merchant from the distant Island of Lantan.

" Gather round, gather round and have a gander at my wares. You there! Yes you ... you look like a capable and hearty adventurer. Come and take a look at what I have in this chest. They look like small pouches of dirt dont they? Well believe you me, if its dirt thats in those pouches ... well then its the most flamable dirt in the world. Smokepowder I call it and I brought it all the way from Lantan I did. Just light the pouch and toss it. It will cloud up an area with thick white smoke to hide your retreat, conceal your passage and confuse those of lesser intelligence! *nudges adventurer* Pay no attention to the daughter of that farmer my young heavy gold pouched adventurer, I have more to show you. *opens another chest* Behold! These complex machines are non other than Boddynock's own Water Clocks! Monitor the passes of Selune with this gorgeous piece of craftsmanship, never be late for a Shieldmeet festival and strategically plan your dungeon raids like no other adventurer! But wait, there is MORE. I have anti-toxins, alchemists fire, holy-water from the temples of Gond, tanglefoot bags and other knick-knacks. Still not impressed? *looks around in a shifty manner and reveals a long polished wooden case* BEHOLD! I call it the "pistol" and it will revolutionize adventuring! First, just pour in a single pouch of my special smokepowder and drop one of these special iron bullets down the nozzle. Bring flame to the fuse, point and.......point and......and.....*KABOOOOOOM* Well? What do you say?"

Additional playmakers:

Swordswallowing, clowns, minor illusionists

Additional main feature:

A Gallows.

An information center...with runners and criers

Additional food:

ale or wine seller...nothing spells good business like a bunch of drunks

Some additional ideas:

Booths for all of the merchants that operate in the town to begin with. This is a perfect time to display their wares.

A Menagerie (sp?). Someone sets up a tent and charges for customers to enter. Inside could be exotic creatures/monsters/remains of said creatures or just elaborate hoaxes. "Behold, the legendary two headed dog, born with but one head!" or "The mythical Esquilax, a creature with the head of a rabbit,....and the body of a rabbit."

Lots of food stands, mostly run by local people who have a particularly culinary specialty: Turkey Legs, Fried Pickles, Steak on a Stake, Pies, Puddings, Meat Pockets, Roasted Nuts, Soup, Funnel Cake, etc., etc.

You always have to have a Gypsy or Fortune Teller. An absolute must. Once again, they can be on the level or a sheyster (sp?). Could be good for campy plot hooks, or at the least to scare/goof on players. I played in a campaign once, many moons ago where a Palm Reader told a character that they would be killed by an Orc. The player was fairly young and new to RPGs and took it very seriously. From then on whenever we had an encounter he would ask, "Do I see any Orcs?" As long as there were no Orcss around he would wade into combat without a care in the world. Fire Giants, Dragons, Beholders...didn't matter to him, as long as there were no Orcs.

The auction idea mentioned before is great. Tons of plot hooks can be tied to that if the players decide to bid on stuff. Once owned to someone powerful who wants it back, item is magical, item defines a particular charateristic about a person when they travel to distant lands (i.e. the Heron blade in Robert Jordan's novels that means you are a master swordsman, that little statue that means you want sex on that one planet from Star Trek: Next Generation).

Hope this gives you some ideas.

I shall second the menagerie, especially if an ogre gets loose.... Also some map selling and a doppelganger, a good one though; to do impressions.
