Toy Store Monsters

Alrighty-o. Took a hike through the local Wal-Mart today looking for some skivvies and possibly a portable CD Player which I was able to Judas Priest test with the cooperation of the local rock station (K-SHE 95) when I decided to take a trip through memory lane (the toy section).

Looking at some of those Yu-Gi-Oh monsters, I thought they might make fine varmints for the game table. Nearby were some Army vehicles that were a bit bigger scale than the Matchbox thingies, possibly being useful for Spycraft games. The old stalwarts Lincoln logs were on hand as well, and Lego and it's clones now have some serious castle and dragon stuff handy.

Now, personally, I thought it was brilliant that there was a system in the Star Wars rules that allow you to use action figures as miniatures. But for D&D games, I was wondering what other toys and gadgets you found useful on the game table.

I was in my local game store a while back and saw a guy using small pokemon figures as monsters on a battlemat. Personally, I plan to use Heroclix figures when (if) I run my Mutants & Masterminds game. Back in my Shadowrun days, I had a couple small robot looking figures that were the size of minis but their arms and legs moved. I used them for heavy combat armored guards. Anything for walls can be cool, like legos or blocks of styrofoam. I can see using star wars lego figures as minis in a star wars game, that might be pretty neat. I really like Stikfas figures, but they are just too big for most gaming, and I'm too lazy to customize them for different genres.

I love finding cheap toys to use at the game. There is a toy store here that sells really cheap "Made in Taiwain" kinds of things (absolutely no offense to anyone from Taiwain intended).

I got these Monster Warriors which make great golems, or maybe giants, or other hulking beasts.

And these Mummies are kind of goofy, but I removed the housewife, and the basketball player mummy, and the rest work just perfect. And, they are absolutely the perfect size.

And these look new! I'll need to rush there to pick these up. I can see using these as goblins, or trolls, or both.

They have a ton of little assorted animals, that make great dire animals, or giant insects, like giant spiders. I even picked up a set of horses that are perfect size.

This store is local to me (Kansas City), but you can order off their website.

USA Toys, the store die_kludge mentioned above, is well worth visiting. It is actually a chain and they have stores across the country. Here is the list:

The Yu-Gi-Oh figures are very cool and nicely done. Some are a little too cartoonish for most games, but each series has at least one or two monsters that are perfect for D&D.

Also, keep your eyes out for some of the Digimon Figures. Most of them aren't terribly useful, but I found quite a few that would make decent Celestials. A lot of stores are currently putting these guys on Clearance, so they can be had cheap.
