Toys For Tots

Aeson

I've gone barmy
The last few years I've made an attempt to buy gifts to donate to Toys for Tots. I normally go with a D&D starter sets. The latest one is a little too much for me this year. I also try to get a children's book or 2. I'm looking for gaming ideas under $25. And children's books under $10.

I’ve given stuff to that charity in the past, but these days, I’m more likely to donate to smaller, local charities. Not that TfT has any issues, just that the smaller ones seem to need proportionally more help. For example, someone we know is connected to a particular community organization that’s just looking for toys $10 or less, for up to teenaged kids.

That said…

To find donations, we typically look for stuff at discount places like Ollie’s, or Half Price Books for books and related items, including gaming books. Decks of cards and classic boardgames are pretty easy to find in that price range. Sporting goods or department stores will often have some kind of footballs (legit or Nerf), basketballs, or frisbees in that price range. Then there’s perennial faves like Matchbox/Hot Wheels etc. die-cast cars (and other vehicles) which can still be found under $1.50 each- under $1 on sale.

Department stores will also have inexpensive plush toys. I know Kohl’s sometimes has plush toys under $10 near their registers, some paired with little books.

We’ve also bought things at craft stores like sketchbooks & coloring books and colored pencils* or crayons for creative outlets. Some of those stores also have plastic/resin toys of people, creatures and even fantasy monsters.

* those last longer than colored pens.

One of the reasons I look at starter sets because I think it would be something older teens can use. I know they tend to be under represented when it comes to Christmas. People want to give things for babies and young children.

I'm not artistic so art supplies isn't something I normally think of. That's a good idea though.

Main reason for Toys for Tots is because when I'm out and about it's at night. Quik Trip gas stations are a drop off spot so I can drop off the donation while I'm working. Also it's secular in concept. I don't know about in practice. I figure they're less likely to refuse what I donate.

Teens are the hardest kids to shop for in that price range. Especially those that you don’t know personally.

If you personally knew the teens you were shopping for, you could tailor your gifts to their needs or interests. That could be as simple as gift cards.

…actually…

If you know of hangouts in the neighborhoods or general areas, a gift card could still be a good gift for a stranger.
