[sblock] No, the world was going to end if he lived, so he went back in time and made sure he died when he was supposed to. I think that's how it was, it has certainly been a while since I saw it.[/sblock]
I think the best way to appreciate this movie is to watch it a second time shortly after the first. Once you know where the story is headed, you can focus on all the clues leading up to the climax and appreciate how beautifully constructed it is rather than be disoriented by the red herrings. The original was frickin' terrible.
Actually, the world wasn't going to end; HIS world was going to end, because the countdown was to his girlfriend's death. Once he realized he was in a divergent time loop, he decided to get crushed by the airplane engine so that the loop would merge back to the main timeline and she would live.
Huh? You mean like the one where he's not in his room when the jet engine crashes through it and the one where he is? (Though, separate timeline would be more accurate.)I've heard people say this before. Is it based off of something besides the movie because nothing in the movie I can see indicates a separate world.
