Training a wolf to wear barding?

So I just discovered, to my horror, that my new Living ENWorld Druid's wolf isn't proficient in the studded leather barding I bought for him. Other than having him take a feat when he hits 3HD, is there a (rules-based) solution for this that would be acceptable given the game's restrictions, which are "Core rulebooks only?"

That's pretty weird. Do they rule that warhorses and riding dogs aren't proficient with barding either? The creature entry doesn't include any armor feats, and only the most exceptional animals will gain them. You'd think that the barding equipment description would say something about this, if it affects 99% of all animals in the world.

If they're adhering strictly to only what's written in the book, I think you're stuck with having the wolf take a feat. IMC I'd allow you to teach "wear barding" as a trick using Handle Animal (at DC 20), but it's not one of the tricks explicitly listed in the skill description.

Funny, there's a very similar thread I started here.

As a wolf is an Animal, I believe that the animal gains armor proficiency if it's trained for war.

And even if it weren't, masterwork studded leather barding has no Armor Check Penalty, so your wolf can wear it without proficiency, at no penalty at all.

I'm pretty sure - as AuraSeer suggests - that "Armor" was on the expanded list of tricks in Masters of the Wild.

A horse trained for war doesn't have any armor proficiency feats, yet it can wear heavy barding proficiently. The rules aren't clear on this but there's no reason a wolf trained for war could not wear barding if a horse trained for war can. Also, as Pendragon says, if the barding has no armor check penalty then the wolf can wear it without penalty.

I think it was just a detail overlooked. I would assume that war trained mounts get the proficiencies for free. Armor as trick doesn't work because war training is already the limit for Int 2 creatures.

From the animal type:

"Proficient with no armor unless trained for war."

I'd have to say that training an animal with the 'attack' trick would count as being trained for war. At most, training an animal for combat riding or fighting would have to qualify.

Given that, and given that there are other creature types which have the line "proficient with no armour" and that this line doesn't preclude them from taking armour feats, I can't imagine a purpose for the line other than to say that animals ARE proficient in armour if they are trained for war.

I didn't see that this thread was SO old.

Anyways...So is a war horse automatically trained for war?

The description says:

"A heavy warhorse can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check."

The literal interpretation I think is that it is already trained to attack. But I guess it has no other attacks or tricks?
