Transformers: Animated

It looks more like a sequel to the old GoBots cartoon than anything having to do with Transformers. Most of the story ideas seem okay, but the character models just look bad.

At least most of the Go-Bots looked like they could transform.

Er, we are talking about the toys where for many of them the "transformation" consisted of pulling the arms and legs away from the torso/main body?

Also I hate to break it to many of you, but this new show is designed to appeal to kids. Just like Transformers was when you were a kid. One of the main reasons why you think this new show is "dumbed" down, is because you aren't kids any more and you aren't viewing it through the rosy colored glasses of a fond Childhood memory.

While I completely agree with this, the real heart of my problem with this Transformers series is the animation style just looks terrible for what its supposed to be. Say what you want about the other series, no matter how bad or good they were, generally the animation style fit the idea of giant robots that transform.

But this...it looks like people in robot suits.

Y'know, that just doesn't make sense. Like I said up there, the animation can easily be improved, and the stories can be better now (multipart stories were virtually unheard of back in the early 80s), but the core of Transformers (giant robots kicking the crap out of each other, and they can disguise as vehicles) doesn't need to be dumbed down. If anything, successful cartoons nowadays tend to be way more sophiticated than those back when we were kids.

One of the surest ways to make something that won't appeal to kids is to design it to appeal to kids. Design it to be cool to teens and kids will eat it up. The target audience for Transformers is the same that buys Max Steel, Justice League Unlimited, Ben 10 and other action figures.

"Kiddifying" something or dumbing it down is not designing something for kids, it is insulting them and their intelligence. I have four kids and they enjoyed shows like the new TMNT (which had complex storylines, serious injuries for major characters, moral dilemmas and other "non-kid" material) and couldn't stand the "kid" shows that made no sense, other than to laugh at the potty humor on occassion.

Transformers should be on the same caliber.

Considering the guys who are doing the new Transformers show involve many of the same people behind JL and Ben 10...are you sure you should be so worried here?

And for all the complaints about Teen Titans, remember that it lasted a good 5 seasons and had some consistantly high ratings. If the new show does about as well, I think kids will like it about as much.
