After getting ahold of the 4th Edition Traveller: Interstellar Wars my first thought was to use the Earth of Transhuman Space rather than the Terra of Traveller with maybe a dash of 2300 AD and Bughunters. Of course, it started a whole bunch of math, since I don't trust game developers to have accurate maps of the stellar neighborhood (I hate the flat Traveller map and the 2300 AD map is dated) and working out the 0.11 g levels and 0.011 g levels for jumps (using 2300 AD), minor planets like Ceres and Pluto have safe jump distances below their surface so they can't be used (maybe the IAU has something).
The Jump number equalling parsecs crossed bothered me (since it doesn't use any fundamental constants of the universe, the 2300 AD 3.85 light years per jump is closer to the sum of multiples of pi, e, and the Euler-Mascheroni constant, which turns out to be about 3.851) and the fact that a jump time of one week does not mean Vland is 2 or so years from Terra, but almost ten times that (in all these years nobody bothered to check that, 22 + 1d6 hours for a jump will get you to Vland in about 2.8 years at Jump-2). I thought about upping the Ziru Sirka to Star Trek levels of technology (except for the Jump-2 which would be 7.702) and put the Virus in the Imperium's past to explain the conservatism of the Vilane and why they never conquered Earth. Also, Zhodani first contact either happened during the Second Imperium or the Long Night depending on whose timeline you are using, so I set it at AD 1857 which allows me a slow introduction of psionics into the campaign (and some conspiracies).

But they are doing first contact and I wouldn't trust the players I want to run the game for with something that delicate.
