Trap Is Triggered And DM Is Confused

In tight quarters these traps limit options a lot. Add a swarm or two to the mix that does aura damage, and it becomes a pretty difficult encounter. A Hobgoblin Warcaster could potentially Force Pulse or Force Lure people into these traps, or a Deathlock Wight could use Horrific Visage to do the same. There is alway Bullrush as well, just have some minions do the Bullrushing, they'll do better damage this way, than if they were swinging actual weapons. A young black dragon tailslashing people into these traps every time someone misses him, will cause some pain.

Remeber this trap is an obstacle, it's meant more as an impediment than a threat, and is meant to be combined with other threats (see trap and hazard roles for examples).

The wording says, “The trap… attacks when a creature enters one of the trigger squares or starts its turn on a trigger square.” It does not say the trigger is the location with the spears.

Well, let's examine that, shall we?

Trigger: The trap, five squares placed randomly in the room attacks when a creature enters one of the trigger squares or starts its turn on a trigger square. When the trap is triggered, all five spears thrust up at the same time, attacking anyone standing on a trigger square.

Who gets attacked? People standing on trigger squares.

The wording does say the trigger is the location with the spears.

Ah, true. I did not pay particular attention to the last line.

You forgot a comma in the first line though, which describes what the trap is and not what the trigger is. But that is nullified by the last line.
