Traps & Treachery

I purchased T&T for the sole purpose of building an epic Session 100 for my current running campaign. I wanted it to really stick out as a landmark session and I didn't really have the time to do all the work from scratch, so I picked up a few books to help me out. I was looking for good, predesigned traps that I could plug into the adventure I was planning and a great system for developing my own traps.

For those of you who don't want to read the whole review, here's a summary. I liked the product. It was as useful as anything I've seen from WotC and not nearly as expensive. Bonus. Even better, the material is Open Gaming Content, so I can submit my finished product to Dungeon when I'm done.

PREDESIGNED TRAPS:

This book contains some great ideas and nice illustration for the traps they include. I would prefer to have twice as many traps and less illustration, but I'm not the average consumer, so I can't really fault them on that. Also, several of the traps are pretty specific and complex. There's a shortage of good, inventive, simple traps in the world and this book doesn't do much to help.

TRAP DESIGNER:

Stinks. I'm sorry to say it, but I'd much prefer to continue using the trap builder included in the Dungeon Builder's Guidebook from 2nd Edition AD&D. If I were to guess, I would say they spent so much time on the pregenerated traps that they glossed over this part, which was a major reason I wanted the book. Based on this, I would give the product 2.5 stars out of 5.

LAYOUT / ART:

The book looks very good. I'll give them that. I think production is overdone these days and that books should be simpler with more content and cost less, but I have to admit the did a good job with it.

PRICE / VALUE:

I paid $24.95 + tax for this book, which I believe to be fair. Much more than that and I would have given it one less star.

So I guess that's it. This is a good product. If the generator weren't so generic and uninteresting, it would be great.
