Bare in mind, though, that Traveller: 2300 was only the first incarnation of the RPG (incidentally, it had nothing to do with the Traveller universe, but was instead the "sequel" to the RPG Twilight: 2000).

The second (much improved and beefed up) version was renamed 2300AD. If you're serious about playing the game, then that's the version to find! :)

The closest I've come to playing Traveller is buying the New Era book and a couple of sourcebooks, Star Vikings and another. I got as far as reading it while laid up with a dodgy back :) For free, you can't fault it though eh ;)

I have that version, picked it up for about $5 at my FLGS one day years ago. Cool stuff, but not exactly my piece of cake.

This was about two weeks ago...

2300AD is, indeed, still the free version. They want $15 for Traveller:2300. The second, better edition is the free one. All of the earlier games, modules, and sourcebooks are still more or less compatible with it.

Moderators, can we merge this thread with the earlier one? Please? :) This one, right here:

By the Bayou, if you like 2300, please stop by my web site (in the .sig). It's all about the game (although everything after the "Hard Science" link is down, right now).

Isn't it actually 2300AD that's being given away anyway?

Yes, it is. I'm still trying to download it - 38 MB is a lot when you have to download it on an ISDN connection, and it doesn't help that my copy of Acrobat Reader frequently crashes when trying to download it...

Like others have said, it has nothing to do with the Traveller universe - it instead makes a very good early attempt at presenting a "hard" SF universe (despite the existence of FTL drive). I've heard nothing but good comments about this setting, so I'd recommend getting it as long as it is still available for free...

Traveller 2300 AND 2300AD

It seems as if DTRPG first gave away a scan of Traveller 2300 and then the next week a scan of 2300AD.

Strange to put them neck to neck, but what the heck, I downloaded both.

Cheers!
