Traveller: Where to Start

I ordered the Classic Traveller CD ROM last Thursday and got it in the mail TODAY. Holy crap that's good service. And the CD itself is mind-blowing. The scans look pretty good, and the sheer volume of material is crazy.

Brothers and sisters, we live in a golden age of gaming. Sadly few among us realize our good fortune, but consider -- for the price of one hardcover book, I've now got every classic Traveller book published by GDW on my hard drive. And soon I'll have a pretty nifty, 21st century ruleset to use these books with.

Any suggestions for a good starter adventure? Twilight's Peak looks awesome, but maybe not so good to begin with?

Twilights Peak is good, but I'd put a little way down the line IMO.

Horde/Chamax plague is quite a good one to start with, or for a 'get the group together' either Prison Planet or Murder on Arcturus Station is quite a good way of getting the group to bond together and have some fun. MoAS probably moreso, unless you wanted to run a 'Prison Break' TV series style thing using the prison planet setting. Annic Nova was also fun, as was Across the Bright Face

Of course, 1st edition traveller had one of the first big mega campaign settings in "The Traveller Adventure" - which while moderately complex is a first rate adventure with plenty of fun things happening. If that is included then it would be a great start.

Cheers

Oh, it's included all right -- This CD rocks! Thanks for the suggestions; I think my plan would be to use one of the introductory adventures as a test case; if successful I would be tempted to run "The Traveller Adventure" as a campaign.

Prison Planet and Murder on Arcturus Station are good. However, "The Traveller Adventure" is set in the Spinward Marches sector which has a lot of published information on it. There's lots of Traveller adventures set in that area too. Something to think about for a long running campaign.

If you're using T20 the .pdf adventures, "The Forgotten War" is set there and has T20 stats for some new ships. There's aslo some extra setting material for the Spinward Marches from Comstar Games at http://comstar-games.com, in the Store area under Traveller. Plus there's the GT book "Behind the Claw" but I think that's out of print. Behind the Claw doesn't have a large amount of GURPS rules in it.

Also, check the Traveller TML Landgrab on the 'Net for free write ups of a number of Spinward Marches systems. And for more Traveller discussion check out the Citizens of the Imperium at:

Garnfellow! Where are you located? I want to play in your campaign! Your enthusiasm is infectious.

Thanks,

I'm in Central Maine (between Bangor and Waterville off I-95), but I am seriously considering running a play-by-chat game to get my feet wet. Advantages: pbc fits a lot better with the sci-fi genre than fantasy. Disadvantages: it would be really hard to run a new game system AND a new chat program at the same time.

(Assuming you're not in Maine) If you're interested in trying a play-by-chat game, you're more than welcome to join.

Yep, a bit of a hike from the DC area. Sure, I'd definitely do a play-by-chat game, but it will depend on scheduling...better chance I can participate if you establish a schedule up front.

Thanks much!

I had to do some digging, but I found a good one for you. It is, literally, called Introductory Adventure - The Imperial Fringe for CT and it came with the Traveller Deluxe Boxed Set. It isn't much of an adventure, but it does give an excellent open-ended campaign for the players, who are hired to engage in an independant checking of the Scout services survey data on the Spinward Marches. With this as a background campaign, the referee can drop any adventure set in the Spinward Marches into it as the players travel from world to world. It also wins nostalgia points because the whole thing starts with, you guessed it, a bar fight.

Give it a look, I'm pretty sure that it is on the CT CD-ROM.

Yeah, it's there . . . have I mentioned how much this CD-ROM rocks?

Murder on Acturus Station is one of my favorite adventures of all time, because, well, it doesn't matter if anyone else owns it or has played it before. You can spin the murder a different way every time.

They are rare to find, but I love massively flexible adventures.
