Trip in AoO

I *know* this has been discussed before, but my ENWorld subscription ran out, so I can't search for the thread.

Can you trip with an attack of opportunity?

I know you can with a "trip weapon". And you can with Improved Unarmed Strike. But what about without these?

A trip attack is an unarmed attack (even if you have a weapon in hand). You don't threaten with unarmed attacks.

Per the SRD, you can make an AoO with an unarmed attack (i.e your trip) if you are a monk, a character with the Improved Unarmed Strike feat, a spellcaster delivering a touch attack spell, or a creature with natural physical weapons.

I might also allow it if they had improved trip, but I don't think the rules back that up.

btw: Does anyone know of a case where an AoO causes an AoO?

Sure. A (without Improved Disarm) tries to disarm B, drawing an AoO. For his AoO, B (also without Improved Disarm) tries to disarm A, drawing an AoO.

There are other possibilities too.

Unless they are tripping with something (unarmed attack or a trip-capable weapon) that they threaten, it looks like a no go for tripping on an AoO with a non-threatening unarmed attack.
