Trombone-toting bards?

And the rapier didn't come into use until the 16th century...

Were you trying to make a point?

My point, if there was one, is that if he's willing to make an anachronistic character and still sleep at night, then so be it.

I've seen trombone players be unable to move the slide after bumping into a music stand. I don't want to know what happens to a trombone after you've been attacked by a dire tiger.

As a trombone player I can attest to to how fragile the slide can be. On the other hand, if it does get shredded by a big bad the metal pieces that are left are very, very sharp - and hollow. That dire tiger will have to deal a very angry bard duel-wielding sharp metal tubes.

The extra bleeding damage alone from having one of those jammed into your side would be nasty!

Actually, you'll need a gnome sized trombone. Your arms are way too short to reach past the bell.

Since the pitch of the sound the trombone makes is decided by the length of the tube, and since a gnome sized trombone would have a LOT smaller tube, meaning higher pitch. That would be one wierd sounding intrument.

Is there anything like that in reality?

I'm not completely sure, but couldn't you keep the pitch the same by just making a couple more loops of tubing.

You could build a horn that wrapped around each shoulder that didn't even have to be held (I mean, in a fantasy campaign, maybe not in the real world)

I don't know if any here have read the comic "Fables," but Little Boy Blue - one of the characters in the series - plays a trumpet, WOULD be the equivalent of a bard in DnD, and also plays jazz at the local bar/pub. . .

It's an interesting take on an old premise. .. so why not a trombone (or other brass-wielding) bard. . . ?
