True Spontaneous Spellcaster

For D&D, Spirit Shaman does what you are looking for.

Other than that, I beleive there are several classes from Arcana Unearthed/Evolved (Monte Cook's alternate PHB) that do exactly that. The Magister for example can ready x amount of simple or complex spells each, then cast them in any combination (like a sorcerer) until they run out of spell slots. They have the entire spell list open to them (except for Complex spells). The other spellcasting classes in that book are also similiar.

Yeah but his magic system is way different from regular D&D (which we are using mainly). And using the magister with the standard system is difficult, i tried. I have that book anyways. :D

Well, as long as you don't mix spells and what not, he should be fine. I don't think it would be any more difficult than integrating in a Warlock, whose spell system is just as different from the base classes.

Just out of curiousity, what problems did you run into when using AU/E magic system and D&D magic system together?

Yeah but The sprit shaman still choses (or preparing) his/her spells which I am really trying to stay away from and to me not a spontaneous spellcaster.

Thanks for all the feedback though.

It's was playing the class into regular D&D was the hard part. the converting you might say.

I am a little confused here... The warmage has a set list of spells from which he can cast in any combination. His spell list is very small though compared to other casters.

Wouldn't it be a benefit to have a larger spell list from which you can select x amount of spells, and switch them out every day depending on what you needed?

The major drawback w/ the spirit shaman is that he can only ever memorize 3 spells per level, even though he has the entire druid spell list to pick from.

Pretty much the entire set of caster classes from Monte Cooks Arcana Unearthed/Evolved. All spellcasters know at least all Simple spells. All Magisters know all Simple and all Complex spells. None of them use spell books, though some require a specific focus like a staff or a magical sword.

The relatively minor alterations he's made to the magic system make SOOOOO much more sense as well. Weaving spell slots, having one feat for metamagic that functions using ladening, all sorts of great stuff that makes much more sense.

And of course heightened and diminished effects.

RPGObjects has all of its spellcasters in Legends of the Dark Ages use a spell points system, but have access to all spells on their spell lists. They can even push themselves to cast a spell of a higher level than they could normally, but this fatigues them and really seriously drains their points.

You can also see some of this in Legends of Excalibur by the same company, where the druid spell lists is treated this way.
