Trying out a super-sale

There's definitely a problem then, because that's the link I followed. Bought 4 ENPub PDFs, and something else that was on special to make up the $5 minimum :)
Yeah, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that figure to be in the hundreds. It's probably my fault- probably did something wrong. :(

Well, as we close in on the end of the first day of the sale, the grand total comes to...

889 Units Sold!

Here's a distribution I snatched from RPGNow sometime last night for those who wanted to see which products were selling more. I've edited out products not in the sale (and free products). Plus there were a couple of products in the sale which were later withdrawn.

Everyone Else (revised) 107
The Complete Guide to Beholders 98
Tournaments, Fairs, and Taverns 95
Three Arrows for the King - The Archer's Guide (revised) 87
In the Saddle: Horses and other Mounts 78
Deadly Games 75
Arcane Strife 70
The Elements of Magic 70
Four-Color to Fantasy 6 (!)
The Complete Guide to Drow 59
Crimson Contracts - The Assassin's Manifesto 55
Thee Compleat Librum ov Gar'Udok's Necromantic Artes 51
Wild Spellcraft 51
Gnomes - Masters of Illusion 45

Yeah, I'm one of the people that couldn't resist the 'stupidly' low prices. I bought TF&T, which I'd been interested in for a while and five others (which interested me only marginally) on the "can't go wrong for a buck" theory.

For reference, I am an infrequent buyer at RPGNow, though that's due more to my current economic situation than anything else. Later this year my income will more than double (and might almost quadruple if my ex remarries) and my buying habits will definitely change then! Oh yeah, this year is gonna be good.

Good luck with the sale, Morrus. I hope it spurs lots of sales for ENP and that it has a bump effect for others as well.

I can see a small but measurable increase in my sales at RPGNow for the last two days. I suspect that means that overall, the sale is benefiting James and the site greatly.

Well done.

While I appreciate the sales and people coming to the store... i've been getting complaints that this sale is really screwing up the top lists. In short, we currently rank based on Quantity sold. But if someone massivly discounts like this they end up dominating the top lists. This is unfair. I'm not saying this was the intent of the sale, but it's happened before with other companies.

So we can change it to rank based on total $ sold per product. But that's also a bit unfair to the people selling $1 products that are list price $1. Maybe we need something like dropping all sales if the discount is over 80%? I donno. The point of the top lists is to get customers to check out good products. Just cause something a really good "deal" doesn't make it a good product (not picking on ENWorld here).

Anyway, I suppose this should be brought up on our own forums. So I'll go do that.

I'll look into the SRC thing, though I see over 100 orders with enworld on it. Thing is SRC can be overwritten by just about anything - any other promos or such.

Actually, I'm sure no one has anything against you bringing up here...

About how gauge the value of a product for a ranking, try these ideas: Rate them by cost divided by page count (yes I know pagecount is not everything), cost divided by wordcount with pictures being rated as a number of words per size...

Or just let it throw off the sales figures, and let everyone understand it is a common method in many industries to boost sales figures. Any publishers has this option as any point. Course this is sometimes refered to as pricecut wars...

Sigh... Actually I don't have any good ideas either...

Hey Morrus:
Thanks for the swag, man! I just grabbed 5 of your nice products myself!

Mr. Oberon

This is unfair.
No it's not. What you suggest is, essentially, penalising anyone who has a successful marketing strategy, which is exactly what this is. What if (for example) I, or Monte, or anyone else, comes up with something fantastic - a great marketing strategy, and their products sell abnormally well. Are you going to punish them for that?

Also - those complaining about the effects of the sale should bear in mind that the sale is benefiting them indirecty. The more customers RPGNow has, the better it is for the publishers who use it.

If people are worried that the can't compete (to paraphrase someone else), then they need to review their marketing strategies and their products. They're either not selling what people want to buy, or they're not marketing it properly. Putting sanctions on those who use such tools successfully (either by luck, good sense or whatever else) is grossly unfair.

I gotta say that, while this sale, its aims and its strategy has nothing to do with RPGNow's top lists (that's just a nice little side-effect), on principle I think I'd be pretty upset if one of the goal posts were moved just because someone was doing well. Nothing to stop those complaining doing exactly the same thing.

I'd think the easiest fix for the problem would be to go back and disallow any sales of products that are on sale.
I'm not following this at all. Do you mean go back and disallow the <b>ranking</b> of any products that are on sale?

Cheers -
