T'uen-rin

Well, a partial list includes:
  • Hound archon hero (MM 17) Saw this one -- two weak and ground-bound
  • Trumpet archon (MM 18) Forgot about a trumpet archon, but not really a good choice vs. a planetar
  • Throne archon (BoED 162) Same thing as trumpet archon
  • The individual champions from chapter 7 of the BoED, if you're allowed to call them. Evansheer (p. 133) would make a good choice. Not allowed I think
  • The einherjar from Deities and Demigods Not an allowed source
  • An aspect of—never mind. LMAO!

You also have the option, IIRC, to call magical beasts. Of these, the shedu is one of the least bad.
You can only call extraplanar creatures with a gate spell.

True. Under the rules in effect, whether the extraplanar creature is a magical beast or not doesn't matter.

I don't own a copy of Draconomicon, but Meineke's older brother would surely be a great asset to any squad. Other than that, high-level Lawful Good creatures seem to lie thin on the ground. A planetar does seem to be a must-have. If you can customize your selections, an advanced planetar would be optimal. There don't seem to be many opponents below CR 22 that a group of radiant dragons and planetars couldn't handle.

No customizing, only the use of base creatures. I could choose a non-LG creature, but the duration of the gate is 1R/L (some baseline rules were necessary for the battle).

Planetars have alignment Always Good (any), so LG planetars are as common as NG ones. Do the rules permit her to call a particular planetar from her home plane of Arcadia?

If not, a throne archon may not be as good as a planetar in other respects, but it brings a lot of healing to the table, including heal and greater restoration 3/day each. Spells it can cast at will include cure critical wounds, restoration, break enchantment and greater dispel magic. Saving a wish to transport any banished allies back, or reverse misfortune, really ought to cover most other contingencies.

I'm certain you've thought of gating in a second t'uen-rin, so I'll say no more about it.

Good point, but I think the gate will 'default' to LG. I'll mention it to Gansk just in case. That would be awfully uncool though to bring up a non-LG planetar.

Excellent points. I will rethink that.

That was my first thought. I rejected the infinite loop gating scenario, however. I have my cheese limits, unless a non-LG planetar shows up, and then fair's fair. :)

I don't want to take illogical advantage of the 'typical spell list' thing.
