Tumbling in Oriental Adventures too powerful?

First Post
Oriental Adventures lists new uses for the tumble skill, one of them being able to take a full round action and then move up to 10 feet with a successful tumble check at a high DC.

Is this use of the skill too powerful?

Should this only be used in Oriental Adventure campaigns?

It, uhm... dosn't make any sense to me. As you've presented it. I mean, the reason a 5' step dosn't provoke an AoO is because it's 5'. Does this allow AoOs? Or is it just a bigger 5' step?

Never experienced any problems with it, myself. By the time you get a Tumble bonus that high, most things you're fighting are going to have 10-15' reach anyway.

Its basically a bigger 5' step.

I don't see a problem with it. You have to have a 40 in tumble before using it effectively. At epic levels, a 10' step is going to be useful, but not game-breaking.

My DM felt it was a bit too powerful in our game.

He reasoned that since it did not appear in the tumble table in the Epic Level Handbook, that option for the tumble skill was not really valid for our campaign.

Plus, since this particular use for the skill appears only in OA, he reasoned it should only be used for Oriental campaigns, and not one of a more "European" feel, such as our campaign in the Forgotten Realms.

At the time I wanted to use this rule, I was 13th level and had 1 level of Bladedancer:

13 ranks of Tumble
+4 Dex bonus
+10 competence bonus for being a Bladedancer
+2 synergy bonus

Effective rank of 29.

The DC for moving 10 feet is 40, so I only had to make an 11 or higher to succeed at the check.

However, I caught my DM off-guard when I attempted to use this skill in the middle of combat when he didn't have a chance to look it over. He made a judgement call on the spot and stated he felt that it was too powerful for our game.

Yes.
