Turn Undead question

I treat it like spell slots IMC. You get your spells after learning in the morning (or whenever) and the number of spells per day doesn't change if you cast owl's wisdom or some other mental stat booster.

Actually, the daily spells slots are the exception to Fox's Cunning, Owl's Wisdom and Eagle's Splendor. The spells description implies that every other use of Int/Wis/Cha is affected*.

*curiously in the SRD I noticed that FC/ES say that the Int/Cha increase gives the usual benefits to related skills and "other uses" of the Int/Cha modifier, while OW says only about related skills. This is not our case, but I really suspect it is an errata (can't see why OW's Wis bonus should not increase Will saves or Monk's bonus to AC for example).

Although it is technically in the rules, I would be willing to bet it is an oversight on the game designer's part. Those things always slip through because when would it come up? IMC turn undead isn't used that often, much less would anyone ever cast eagle's splendor to get even more.

Even though it would never come up IMC, I can see the need for a ruling. I'd probably not let it increase beyond your normal alotment/day. I think logic shows that turn undead is more closely related to spell slots than skills or DCs. I do, however, agree 100% that it would increase your check result on Turn Undead.

Similar issues arise with Paladin's lay on hands ability. And you can't tell me that that isn't used regularly. And for a high-level Paladin, the 2nd level Eagle's Splendor seriously outshines the 3rd level Cure Moderate Wounds. Eg. for a 16th level Paladin, you're looking at a flat 32 points of extra healing from LOH vs. 2d8+8 rolled with CMW ... if you let ES do that, of course.

I do not think it is an oversight so much as too minor a detail to bother fixing.

It is better as a matter of game to design to allow minor exploits than to clutter the rules with a mountain of confusing clarifications. We could have an entire chapter dedicated to the mechanical details of shifting stats. Wouldn't that make Antimagic all the more fun?

Well, turning attempts count against a daily total. I would allow you to gain more from the use of Eagle's Splendor, but it would just accrue against your today. If you used 5/7 for the day, cast Eagle's Splendor to gain an extra 2, then you would have used 5/9. Say you use two more before the spell expires, now you have used 7/9. When the spell expires, you will be at 7/7 and you will be out, unless you cast Eagle's Splendor again.

Now, if you use Eagle's Splendor and end up using your "extra" turnings, you will be ack up at 9/9, or "overdrawn" at 9/7 when the spell ends. Of course, at that point, further uses of Eagle's Splendor won't gain you any more turning attempts since you would just be bumping your total per day, which you have already met.

Eagle's Splendor just allows you to, temporarily, exceed your normal bounds. It does not provide a reset on the number of times you have used an ability in any given day.

THis is excatly how we read it and do it in our game.

Works fine.
