Turning conventions on their heads...

Most fantasy settings hold similar conventions/themes regarding the nature of creation, history, etc. with a descending power factor. Creation was "top down" (everything created by the gods/one god/some primordial superbeing) and as history progressed things became more and more mundane.

Most settings start with a primordial past where great magic abounds. Gods and demon lords walk the earth and all sorts of craziness happens. Often a god/angel rebels and becomes the original BBEG, tearing the cosmos apart and basically creating all sorts of monsters, evil planes, etc.

Then this is followed by a long murky history of mighty mages and legendary heroes, doing mythological things and all that fun stuff.

Then fast forward to the "present day." Gods are remote, fiends are "locked away" but some sneak out. You have mighty mortals, but their power is dwarfed by those of the past. Evil wizards research the past, looking for secrets of the previous age. Mighty ancient artifacts, more powerful than anything created in contemporary times, are hidden away waiting to be discovered. So, too, are powerful evils biding their time.

What would a setting be like if these things were reversed? In the real world it is modern discoveries that dwarf those of the ancients. Discovery is about finding something new, not something old. In such a world, an ancient lich lord, asleep for a thousand years, would be a thousand years out of date, hardly a match for a modern mage. Ancient magic swords? A quaint discovery. Demons of the past? They are an endangered species, eclipsed by newer evils. Wizards no longer research magic by looking for ancient spellbooks, they work in laboratories, trying new combinations of magic (possibly with disastrous results).

Somewhat like Exalted, I think. :D

I'm not familiar with that game... *wikipedia to the rescue!*

It seems to me that Exalted actually glories in those traditional conventions. The game is all about the primordia. PCs are heroes because of some ancient god/bloodline/whatever. I'm proposing a world in which it's not ancient influences that create power, but modern developments and progress.

I think you're a genius. I was trying to think what i wanted to include in my new game world and I think this is it.

Recent changes have unbalanced the elemental planes and sorcerors have been created, waygates are forming planar travel is beginning. Monsters invade from hell for the first time ever. Sounds good and epic and of course it gives the PCs a reason to want to adventure to sort this out.

Sweet, you may have just made my day.

It's essential to D&D that older = better. The main motivation for dungeon delving is to loot the treasures of the ancients.

yes, assuming you're playing D&D. I don't think the OP was thinking of a D&D like world.

it doesn't have to be treasure of the ancients down there. Look how many races dwel l underground in D&D plenty of moden competition is living underground as far as i can tell.

not to mention dungeons don't ahve to be underground. Essentially any large structure that is sectioned off can be a dungeon. I think his point is valid though, the iconic D&D image is chasing the treasure of ancients in dungeons.

In the past things were pretty blah, but with spell research building off of things over time, we're really starting to roll now!

So the powerful magic is being used now, which means powerful people are running around now and involved in events.

There could also be an influx of power that redefines the world now, so magic is easier or more powerful but more unstable, etc. New things arise and power balances shift.
