Travel while climbing is at a third of the rate it was while traveling the road across the plains. Several places along the switchbacks, the crew can look back out over the plains and admire the beauty to the horizon line. Looking up the mountain in the direction of travel, sighting distance is markedly shortened due to the rising elevation.</p><p></p><p><strong>Weather</strong>:</p><p>The temperature notably cools as the party climbs to higher elevation, especially at night, but this still being a warmer party of the year, the change is comfortable rather than burdensome. There is a light breeze occasionally.</p><p></p><p><strong>Observations</strong>:</p><p>Each person's sensitivity is still limited to a matter of steps, nothing farther. Creatures that can readily be observed at such short distance are small birds, which are extremely skittish and take flight when they notice people, insects, small lizards, orb weavers, and varmints.</p><p></p><p>At distances numbered in paces creatures that can be readily observed are medium sized birds, which are also extremely skittish and will run or take flight at distances too great to allow interaction, medium snakes and lizards, hunting spiders, large varmints, and hostile peoples.
