TV before bed bad for sleep?

Barring sex, I have always found that stretching right before bed really slows down my (tightly wound and fast-running) clock.

It isn't the reading, it's the light. According to work by Czeisler, close exposure to even normal levels of light before bedtime pushes back your circadian clock.

You know I have no issues with falling asleep. Growing up I was accustomed to having the noise from my TV. When I was stationed on Carl Vinson I got use to sleeping with the light on and also to the noise of a plane landing on my head or the noise of the waves hitting the metal hull of the ship, the constant movement of the ship. Once you get accustomed to something stick with it. :shurg:

As for your second question, I was amused to read Consumer Report's article on sleep a few years back, where people overwhelmingly voted for sex as their favorite sedative. :)
If for some reason that doesn't work for you try a big glass of milk. :)

My German 102 TA, a lovely lady from Regensburg, recommended that a classmate of mine drink a nice warm glass of beer before bed to help her sleep. She seems to forget that most of us do drink, but it's technically illegal here still ;).

Me? I can sleep whenever, especially sitting up in a hot lecture hall with a boring professor. :D
