TV - Survivor: Palau - 04/21/2005 - [Spoilers]

Hand of Evil

Hero
Epic
As I do not see one for this week!

What an episode, the star of this one was the host with the most; Jeff, who talked Janu off the island and allowing Steph to stay on the island. Makes you wonder what was editted from what we saw!

Tom shows that he is just not strong but smart, maybe it was fire fighting training but making the tube with his hands kept him immunity.

This was one of the best eps of Survivor yet. Looks like things are setting up quite well for some heads to finally roll.

I didn't feel that Jeff talked her into doing anything she didn't already want to do. I saw it like him doing what he usually does (stir the pot). She looked miserable from day one and really didn't want to be there at all which makes no sense to me as she knew what she was getting into. Also, Janu got to spit right in the face of everyone by screwing their strategy which had to feel good. They weren't going to give her the satisfaction of a clean vote-off so she gave 'em the finger and left.

Not being able to keep down the real food must have been a real sign to her that she was done. That and she bailed on the challenge after 6 minutes because the water was too cold. Ouch. That and everyone hated her and was dumb by laughing at her, alerting Steph to their plan. Steph then played it perfectly the rest of the way. If anyone convinced Janu to lay down her torch it was Steph.

I also liked how Greg looks to be turning into the villain. We haven't had a good villain in a while. The roles as I see them now:

Easy to route for: Steph. I haven't routed for a player this hard since Rupert. He was dumb. Steph is not.

Dead weight: Katie. Soon to be referred to as the next Janu. She does nothing around camp or in challenges and will be the token "we can just vote her off later and use her for now" player. Or she could just annoy everyone to death so they dump her.

The BIG threat: Tom. The only person who could have a chance against him in the final vote would be Steph. He should have the biggest target on his back as of right now.

The sleeper: Caryn. Solid in challenges and no natural enemies. Could fly under the radar to the end.

The evolving villain: Greg. We'll see where this one goes. He tried to play puppetmaster this week and it almost worked.

The wildcards that may not be wildcards: Ian & Jen. They go where their alliances take them but from the looks of next week that could drastically change. Neither of them are currently targets or threats so they have wiggle room.

Yea, Greg is turning into a good villian and to me sitting in a good place right now. He has a foe in Steph, he is a behind Tom and Ian...The guy may end up winning it because of the setup he has made for himself.

Myself, I was surprised that nobody told Greg to his face that every argument he was using against Steph could also be used against him. He's a physical threat (came in 2nd or 3rd last night, can't remember), much moreso so far than Steph. On top of that he's got a small but strong alliance that should be nipped in the bud now. He had a minor point about her getting sympathy votes, but her latecomer-ness might work against her too, as she has less friends on the jury (no one from her old tribe).

If it were me there, I'd be gunning for Greg before I come after Steph.

There's going to be some very interesting alliances and political wrangling over the next couple of episodes. Judging by the previews for next week, Stephanie is becoming a little more proactive in trying to stay in the game.

My prediction is that Tom keeps immunity next week, pushes to keep the original alliance of himself, Ian, Katie and Stephanie together but sides with Stephanie in her suggestion to vote off Gregg. Stephanie tries to get an all-girl alliance formed and tries to vote off Tom. Tom wins immunity so she has to go with the next threat, Gregg.

Of course, I could be entirely off-base but that's part of the fun behind armchair quarterbacking with Surivivor. An interesting point so far is that there have been no mental challenges (such as puzzles or memory games) in the individual immunity competition yet. As long as it remains physical, Tom is the strongest and most likely to win player. If the challenge moves to a purely mental game, don't be surprised to see Caryn sneak in and steal immunity. She's got it together upstairs and will surprise a few people.

If Steph does somehow make it to the finals, no matter who she is up against, she is almost guaranteed a win because of everything she has gone through to stay in the game. Personally, I would like to see Tom and Steph in the finals because they both are the best all-round players in the game this season. Unfortunately, I have my reservations that neither will be there for the finals.

This is my feeling too, if Tom or Steph don't get immunity, one or the other can go just like that, this is why Greg and Ian too, could be dangerous but Ian just is not as strong as Steph, Tom and Greg, plus he seems to lack the killer touch that Steph has in spades and Gregg is starting to show. :uhoh:

I don't think it's very smart of him to keep winning the immunities at all. He doesn't need them at the moment and he's just showing everyone what a threat he really is. If he keeps winning he'll be sure to be voted off the minute he loses one. At least, they'd be smart to vote him off. If left to his own devices he'll go all the way.

Steph's in trouble but she'd work real well as a suprise vote in a new alliance and that looks like what she's trying to do next week. I'd like to see her make it to the end.

Janu really ticked me off, sorry I don't buy that "I accomplished what I wanted to do" line for a single moment. What did she accomplish anyways besides sitting around doing nothing? How many challanges did she actually compete in without bailing as soon as possible? How many people would give their eye teeth for a chance to do what she just threw away?

As for Steph, I don't see how so many people like and support her? She does nothing but whine and complain and if something goes wrong its always someone elses fault. She has this whole "I'm so tough, I can do anything I want," routine but when push comes to shove the waterworks start and the whining continues. The only reason she has survived this long is due to luck not skill. Although she does give 110% at the challenges she is far to emotional to manipulate the others to survive to the final two. Although if for some reason she does make it to the last two she will walk away with the million easy.

Tom has to keep winning the second he doesn't he is gone, he was the main reason they crushed Ulong and everyone knows it, so does he and he is smart enough to know that there is a huge target on his back.

Surely the other players have to be aware that Tom has never lost an immunity challenge, from group challenges to individual. They would be crazy not to vote him off as soon as he slips up, probably in a puzzle challenge.

Although I enjoy the show, my one problem with Survivor is that the best "man" rarely wins. Usually the best are voted off because they are greater threats, and someone who is middle-of-the pack, or slightly above, in terms of physical, mental and social skills grabs the big prize.

I wasn't really upset that she quit. Partially because I really wanted Steph to stick around and Janu is just a lump of boring. The other Survivor who quit (can't recall his name) was a disgrace. He quit emotionally and just wussed out. It was pretty well stated that Janu had nothing left in the tank for quite some time and wanted out.

And it did seem like she accomplished something that last day on the lone island. She got herself a fire and survived on her own. She wasn't the most useless in challenges (that dishonor belongs to Katie). As for throwing away the chance at the million - yeah, that is frustrating and annoys me a bit as a fan of the game and as someone who would love to play someday. Seemed like she should never have been there in the first place. Especially compared to the rest of the tribe (with a couple exceptions).

What you see as whining and crying, I see as heart and strategy.

She knew she was on the way out. And she wants to win but like and warrior if she is going to "die" she wants to go down fighting and lose to a stronger opponent. By the tribe keeping the far weaker (in all aspects) Janu over her it was too hard to take. Going down like that is disgracing to someone who's played the game that hard. Not to mention that she was told by Tom that they would protect her. So she played her only card: appeal to Janu's feminine side and overalls desires to leave on a high note.

Jeff did some prodding but by shear will alone Steph got Janu to quit. I say, well played. Those were tears of frustration and fight, not girly waterworks. And yes, luck plays a factor in the game, but that can only take you so far. There was a reason why she outlasted her entire tribe: she was the best player. Witness the fire elimination challenge. BJ built 20x the fires that she did but she was the smarter.

Lastly, she may be emotional, but she has already endured making mistakes in the social part of the game and learned from them. Greg, for example, hasn't. She knows how to stay alive and keep people on her side or at least make them see her point. That's why she is still around.

It certainly will be interesting to see what the tribe does when he is vulnerable. I do agree that if they were smart, they'd get rid of him ASAP. He's The Threat. But then again, there are still many strong players left so it could come down to personalities. It would be really refreshing to see the strongest actually make it to the end. That Final Four would be: Tom, Steph, Greg & Ian. However, a case could be made for everyone being strong except for Katie.
