Twist My Adventure Idea

Great suggestions! While I LMAO at Aeolius's post, I eventually settled on this:

The miners actually broke into the spawning chamber of a long-dormant ancient eldritch race (think mind flayers). The parasitical larvae of these Tentacled Horrors have infested some of the miners and they work to lure more potential hosts down to their lair. The escaped miner has been shown various illusions that indicate various monsters and treasures in the depths in the hopes that some powerful adventures can be lured down to serve as hosts. The parasite infesting him will only begin the physical transformation of his body once they adventurers are underway in the mine.

Since I'm planning (as of now) to run this as a convention game, I don't want to get into too many layers, though if I adapt this for a home game, I'll put a lot more of the suggestions into play.

For a different twist...

The miners found hallucinogenic shroom spores in the mine, and most are still down there enjoying the effects. Those that escaped are suffering from delusions.

However the spores are slowly transforming the high miners into something else. Maybe the babbling incoherent escapees weren't hallucinating... will the party find out after its too late?
