Two Rule Questions

First Post
Both of which came up in my session tonight.

- Is cleave applicable when chopping off a hydra's heads?
- What would happen if sticks to snakes was cast on a treant?

Cleave vs Hydra has been brought up before. I think strickly speaking it's not aloud, but I allow it because I think the effect looks cool. Others have done the same.

I don't know about Sticks to Snakes, what book is it in I don't see it in the PHB.

Maybe sticks to snakes didn't make the 3e cut. It was in (IIRC) 2e, 1e, and I think even Basic. But...I guess the question's null and void.

It's a good question, I just haven't seen a write up on it. Maybe it follows under polymorph other now?

If I remember how the spell used to work, I'd say it did nothing.

Sure the snakes could attack the Treant. But the Treant certainly wouldn't be turned into a really big honking snake.

I am pretty sure the spell only worked on relatively small sticks, defintely nothing the size of a Treant.

IIRC you have to use some common sense here. Sticks to Snakes could only be cast on sticks. A treant is a creature and does not count as a stick. Just like an entire tree is not a big stick. You have to rip the sticks off the tree first, so that the stick is no longer "alive" by being attached to the tree.

Actually, if you ripped some twigs off the treant, they should revent back to normal sticks, so that would be fair game, I think.
