I'll have to check those out, Mark. Thanks!

Lawnmower has some cool sci-fi effects and wierd twists and Dinner has a sappy side (or a "heart" if you prefer) but both are decent movies.

IMHO I thought that TTT was an extremely emotional movie. In fact, (embarrassing moment about to be revealed) maybe I'm just an emotional person, but I actually felt a tear in my eye when Gollum/Smeagol had the first conversation.

I was VERY annoyed that Fellowship didnt recieve Best Pciture AND Ian McKellan didnt even get best supporting actor! As for TTT I think Andy Serkus(or however you spell it) should get something for Gollum. I have issues with the inacuracies of TTT but Gollum was great.

All of that can still happen in year three, as has been ordained... :p

Doubt it. We're talking about Hollywood and foreign members that makes up the Academy roster.

...and you don't think that helps a film made in New Zealand that breaks the Hollywood mold and flies in the face of conventional film making?

Where are all the hard sci-fi movies, like, I don't know, Solaris or the Cube?

IIRC, Morgan Freeman is working on bringing Rendezvous with Rama to the big screen. That would definitely qualify as hard SF. :)

And if jonrog1's Foundation movie gets made, that would be another step in the right direction. And with Clarke and Asimov represented, we need to get someone working on a Heinlein property to complete the hat trick. :)

Not if the foreign members have the same mindset as Hollywood, thumbing at fantasy genre films.

Besides, how those majority of the foreign members voted for a Broadway musical adaptation, Chicago, over LOTR:TTT is way beyond my comprehension of the humans' Common Sense. ;)

On the "farting sunshine" side, it's nice that TTT is nominated.
